is 1 hp. worth 1,000 dollars

I came across an ad for 3W engines that had a new 210cc it stated that the hp. is 20.6 there 170cc listed in the same add listed 19.5 hp. for it. cost the 210 $2,675.00 the 170 $1,695.00 . are we getting taken or can someone explane why 1hp cost $1,000 dollars

Nobody is getting "taken". If that's too expensive for you, then don't buy it . You're also comparing CS vs Classic

Hi,

They are completely different engines. The 170 is a bored out 150 with porting modifications. The 210 is a bored out 200 which is a larger, heavier engine.

I think you dividedwrong because it is more like $100 per hp. Actually on the case of the 170 it is less th.an $100 but in the case of the 210 it is more than $100 per hp.

difference in horsepower 1.1... difference in price $980. I think thats roughly $1000 for 1 more horsepower.

You may care to ask users who have run both it and the ZDZ210 to give opinions about it's actual or comparative performance .

Hello Bob, IMHO I doubt very much if all these advertised horse power claims are true. I have a dyno sheet from Homelite for a un muffled 2.5 cubic inch super ez chainsaw engine, which was a modern design, hemi chamber reed induction engine. max hp. 2.6 at 8000 rpm, torque was 7500.

There's more to an engine than horsepower. How big of a prop can the 210 swing? Probably something like a 34-12. How many more pounds of thrust does it produce over the 170? IMO, if it produces 15 pounds or more thrust it might be just what someone needs to make their plane have a respectable thrust-to-weight.

first off the ads were showing the cs was the 210 the classic was the 170 they are both 3W i am not raging on 3W it just don't seem worth the extra money for 1.1hp I don't have a dog in the hunt but i have a frend who is building a 50% pitts and he thinks a 170 will be fine in it

Likewise, if you don't think it's worth the money, then don't buy it. Nobody is twisting your arms about it .

Sorta off topic but even at$2675.00, at least you are getting an engine from 3W for your money.

I shudder to think you would pay + - $200.00 (+ - 8%) in state sales taxes alone to bolt that engine on your firewall if bought local.

Not to forget the $1140.00 in state and Fed taxes you had to pay on the $3800.00 earned income to have the $2675.00 in funds left over to make the purchase! (and some wonder why "living" for most households requires two incomes.)
Gee - those combined taxes = 1/2 the asking price of the engine.

(Please be advised- this ain't a political statement - just a wake up call)

Okay - that chit out of the way - now on topic:
Bob B - I changed my perspective on the "Hobby Money" a long time ago. (my AMA is 74695). You may do well trying this too. I view money spent on my longtime hobby as "Hobby NUMBERS". NOT DOLLARS! Since the cost/price of some items is so out of touch with real world value- you just gotta whine n' wince and then pony up - if ya gotta have it!.

What it takes me to earn the $2675 and what it "gets me" at the LHS is no longer relevant. I enjoy my hobby enough as it helps me justify all the crap I put up with that having a job brings into my life.

I'm also truly thankful I had the hobby before the wife too. THAT is a crucial timing point in making the Hobby NUMBERS thing work in a household budget. She has just learned not to ask and is happy I'm so happy not going out "with the guys Saturday night" and chit.

Bob B.

Look at it this way. Both engines have the same bolt pattern so if the 170 does not have enough umph and the plane needs nose wt (most likely), the 210 will bolt right on.

Re: is 1 hp. worth 1,000 dollars

Ok here's my two cents.

Does it swing the prop you need on the airplane?
Forget the money issue - it will only cloud your judgement -

The real question is will this engine get you the performance you want in the airplane.

FWIW - Horsepower rating are mostly bull**** numbers anyway don't fall for it - IMHO.

Will the engine turn the prop you want at the RPM you need to get the airplane to do whaht you want - this is the real question - you should be asking.

Now - IF the engine does what you want it to - reliably - then it is worth the money - and you're getting the fun factor out of it - then spend the cash if you have it and enjoy it. Forget about the cash or it will ruin your decision making process - IMHO.

I know your trying to justify buying the engine - sometimes it won't make sense. Everything is way off the charts in this hobby.

My opinion - take it or leave it...

Hope it helps,

Ronster
