Flight Idle DA-100

I'm flying a Hangar 9 Extra 260, with a DA-100. Before takeoff I always bump up the idle, to give me a buffer, so my engine doesn't quit in flight, then before landing I adjust it back down.
I've got landing idle set at about 1000 RPM's. Just wondering what kind of idle, most guys are flying with.
Thanks
Harry

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

Don't know. I set my ground idle somewhere between almost dying and not enough to pull the plane around. I set my flight idle probably a few hundred more rpm's to make sure it won't die in flight. My landing idle is my ground idle. I can always give it a few notches of throttle if I need it.

I assign my ground and flight idles to a switch on my transmitter, just like I do my dual and triple rates.

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

I have a DA 100 and I do the same thing. I did not use to though, until I was in an inverted flat spin, pulled out and put a big load on the engine and it died. I was able to land pretty good, it hit hard and splayed the gear, broke a prop and broke the firebox up some. All in all it came out pretty good for as low as I was when the engine died. Ever since then I click my idle up about 4 clicks when I fly and down to land. I don't like doing that, but I don't like bustin up my planes even more. I want to send my engine in to DA so they can go over it, but it will have to wait till after flying season is over.

I use a JR radio, and add about 3 clicks of throttle before a takeoff, but some of my down lines seem pretty fast, so I'm wondering if maybe my flight idle is set to high.

2 blade props will idle lower than 3 blade props.

What prop are you running, that might have a lot to do with the speed.

1,400 in flight, as low as you dare for landing (1,000 to 1,100.) 1,400 should stop it from dying in certain spin entries, tail slides etc... actually for tail slides a couple of clicks extra might be a good idea.

Depends how lean it is and how well broken in. Some of my older engines can hold a reliable very low idle ... but 1,400 I have found to be safe.

Yes - 3 blades need a little more idle.

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

I know the 9303 have a ground and flight idle program that can be set-up does a 9cap have this. If so can someone point me in the right direction. It would be great to lower my idle down with just a flip of a switch.

Thanks
Tom

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

I guess I'm the odd one out here not flying DA. I use DLE, BME, and Brison engines and only have a need for one idle setting. The one that is used on the ground that does not let the plane roll on the runway is the one use for flight. However, I do let my engines warm up before establishing the idle.

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

I set my idle on the gound as well after warm up but will bump it up a couple clicks after take off. The reason I do this is I have found that when doing spins I tend to pull back more on the throttle stick at idle and this closes the butterfly just enough that if I was at a low throttle setting its possible that the engine would die. And its not a DA thing. It would happen to any engine.

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

my whole goal in wanting to set my plane up like this is that I will be starting IMAC. Where I want to keep my Idle up alittle for flight and not worry about a flame out. Right now my Idle is set at a decent spot but i would like to bump the rpm's up a little just to be sure I dont have any problems when I pull back to idle.

Set up a mix and mix throttle to throttle and set it up so that when you flip the switch it will add or take away throw.

Re: Flight Idle DA-100

I've noticed a similar action with some transmitters. The lowest throttle stick position at the tx gimble is not the same unloaded and loaded. Pull the stick back and take your hand off is one throttle position but it can be reduced a little further with a small amount of thumb pressure. That doesn't promote those warm and fuzzy throttle settings we would all like to have.
