33% Pawnee Construction

We are building a H9 33% Pawnee for towing large gliders. The engine is a DLE 111cc twin with all Hitec servos. The only problem so far during construction is one of the wing struts was bent at the fuselage attach point. We we tried to straighten out the brace the end fitting broke. Any construction tips, comments, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Other notes: you need to reverse on elevator and one flap servo.........the manual makes no mention of this.

What prop are you running? I know that a 100 is fine but Peter was saying that ground clearance may be an issue any bigger than that with 2 blade props.

Run some Formula 56 canopy glue in beads around all the windows and window frames.

Count on mouting the batteries and probably some lead in the tail. I have two A123 2300's back there and 3 sticks of lead.

See you at Coca Beach, is yours going to be ready by then?

I built mine just as the manual shows. I used a GT80 with stock mufflers in the nose. There was no weight needed for me. Batteries were mounted on the tray forward of the cockpit. Here is Buzz checking out his new seat in the Pawnee.

How the heck did you get the batteries in the cockpit with a GT80? Mine got converted to EI so all the weight of the magneto, one way bearing, starter spring is gone and I still needed the batteries in the tail. I'm guessing they expected that given that there's a battery trey already provided back there, depending on what motor you choose.

Hey Andy.....good to hear from you, I thought I'd start this thread to see what kind of response i'd get. The DLE 111cc manual says to use a 27x10 prop for break-in. I ordered 2 2700 NiMH from Hangtimes and will run them in parallel for current and redundancy. Should start the engine this weekend, and possibly maiden. I will see you in Cocoa with or without the Pawnee. Stay in touch.

Hey guys, quick construction update......mine is tail heavy!!! I have a DLE 111cc on the front, moved ALL the batteries up front and still need to add 2 lbs of weight to the front.
The DLE 111cc is over 1 lb lighter than the GT-80.

Andy your videos are awesome....I keep coming back to them. where did you mount the camera in/on the Pawnee?
Not sure what I'm going to do about the weight that I need to put in the front to balance.

Andy,
How far down is your second notch of flaps? I would like to get as much drag as I can with the flaps all the way down. I've attached some pics. The switch panel is for the rx and ignition batteries.

I just ran the end point for full flaps till the servos started buzzing to get as much as I could.

Believe it or not, the GoPro is stuck to the roof of the cabin with the double side tape that it comes with. Same with the glider, its was unceremoniously plunked to the top of the wing saddle with double side tape.

Marc, I'll have to make up some Pawnee Mafia stickers for the aero tow in Coca
I like what you did with the switches. Had I realized what I was going to do with that Red Aero pilot I probably would have mounted my switches on his mounting plate.

Bill (the one that is doing all the work) is a master with detail, and does a fantastic job in all of his construction projects.
I thought the switches were a great addition to the cockpit.
