If you want colored smoke you need to use pyrotecnics.

First I dont know what the additives are but coloured smoke is absolutely possible. The RAF aerobatic team even have the ability to change colors midstream but I dont know the details on how.

If anyone out there knows I would also like to know how they do it.

While you are on the subject of smoke-Does anybody know anything about using anti freeze from a car for smoke
I saw somebody on T.V. making a ''James bond car'' and they ran anti freeze through the exhuast similar to the way we do it with our planes and it made a brilliant ,thick, very white stream of smoke come out of the exhaust(for the purpose of blinding people that are chasing you)

Re: What additive to use to make coloured smoke?

THe RAf team uses a dye that can be had from Morton Thiokol, actually Morton Chemical division now.

THey are headquartered in Illinois.

But, and it is a big BUT, you have to have sooooo much of it, and it has to be soooo hot it will be an ungodly mess that will stain everything it touches including YOU. The ratio to get to look colored coming out of your tiny (compared to the afterburner of a jet) is almost 70% dye to oil.

I have read about it, and actually contacted Morton about it.

For the money (you have to buy it my the barrel) and the mess....it will stain your field, clothes, flora and fauna, it just ain't worth it.

Colored smoke tubes on the wingtips are much cheaper and cleaner.

If it was even plausible ...one of the Hotshots in the hobby would be using it....eh?

Mmmm,

Sounds like the kind off stuff the EPA would love to find you using so they could ban RC model flying for ever.

Looks like white smoke is here to stay.

believe me, I talked the ear off the guy at Morton. I had visions of a crimson field, striped and dotted, with my hands looking like a perp with dye covered hands from am exploding money bundle. LOL.

Re: What additive to use to make coloured smoke?

The dye referred to in this thread is injected by the outlet of the exhaust into the vapor we see as white smoke. So as the white vapor is on its way out the exhaust pipe the dye is 'mixed' with the white vapor that was already made using regular ole smoke oil.
Other than by using this 'mixing' process there is no way to achieve coloured smoke through vaporization.
If you were to 'invent' an additive that could be added to and mixed with smoke fluid that made it vaporize into a color, then you my friend would be very very rich!!
