3W 80 Ignition Conversion w/pics

Just switched my 3W 80xi AIS edition over to the RCexl ignition (Thanks to WrongWay RC!!) My 3W ignition is perfectly fine, Rich just asked me to do the conversion and gave me a great deal on the ignition to do it.

1st. Remove Hall Effect pickup and carefully remove the cover where the actual sensor is CA'd in place.

2nd. Remove sensor and carefully clean all the old CA from the housing.

3rd. I put a spark plug in the cap and attached the supplied hall sensor and battery to check which side of the sensor is the pickup side (Numbers/Letters go down, facing the magnet.)

4th. Center pickup with writing side down in old sensor housing and thick CA in place. Replace cover (add a couple drops of thick CA to hold in place) and wire wedge.

5th. Attach loosely the sensor to the crankcase and install degree wheel.

6th. Attach an indicator wire to front exhaust bolt and bend into position to get a reading on the degree wheel.

Now you'll have to dial in the degree wheel. The method used here utilized a VERY soft piece of aluminum wire CAREFULLY(!!!!!!) inserted into the exhaust port and the prop hub was rotated back and forth CAREFULLY(!!!) until the degrees on the wheel were the same end point (You'll have to turn the degree wheel a bit until it reads the same number to the left as it does when the hub is turned to the right). The degree wheel here with the thickness of aluminum wire we used was 109.5 degrees left and the same to the right. Once that is done you can accurately set the timing and tighten down the sensor

Once you have the degree wheel dialed in you can reconnect the battery to the ignition (With plug in the cap) and rotate the hub to check initial timing. Rotate the sensor till you get the spark at 28-30 degrees, lock down the sensor, and you're finished! Go fly!!

My 80xi has two magnet on the hub, I don't know why, which magnet do you use for timing, will the second magnet on the hub effect the ignition in anyway?

Set things up so that the green magnet triggers the ignition.

TKG is right, use the green magnet for timing.

The 3W has a timing mark on the hub and case with magnets inplace, what's with the timing wheel ?
is this not just a swap ? cover half the magnet with the sensor with the timing mark lined up or is there more to this?

Converting a 3W 75, two magnets

Not just a swap. The sorta timing on a 3W ignition is around TDC. The RCEXL is timed in the 25-30 Deg BTDC.
The 3W hash mark is TDC, so it is useful to set 0 deg on the degree wheel.
BUT you can not correctly time an engine by lining up the sensor at a certain mark. There are variables that effect actual timing. Magnet strength, air gap and the sensitive of the sensor. So time the spark as shown on this thread

Thanks TKG, just saw the reply. RoadHog, TKG is correct, the mark on the hub is TDC, thus no good for timing but good for finding TDC as he said.

Good demo flynz. Has anyone ever used a timing strobe on their engines?
