Dang, I was hoping there was a way I could get our club into the mix. But an 1100 mile trek north would be a nightmare. I sure like where this idea is headed.

Thank you Frank

I'm a 25 year veteran of the Oregon Army National Guard. I have gone on three tours since 1999, one to Bosnia and two to Afghanistan (2002 & 2006). I was one of the lucky ones to come home without any physical issues. I'm also a RC pilot and member of the Eugene RC Aeronauts. I wish we could help, but don't think that you will be going through Oregon on this trip.

If there is anyway we can still help or talk about it with the media at our funflys please let me know. We tend to get alot of local media coverage at our event and would love to have some talking points to use when in front of the cameras.

Please let me know how I can help and good luck.

Thanks again.

I'd hate to disappoint anyone, but FL might be a huge stretch with the number of volunteers we are getting in the SE. I'll keep you guys in mind if we can swing it though and appreciate the interest.

It would be tough Dan. I am hoping we can pull this off. We have a long way to go, but with help and determination, I think we can make it happen.

Thank you for your service and glad to hear you made it back all three times safely. We won't be able to make it to Oregon with our planes, but since we are raising money for the Wounded Warriors Project, you and your club mates can certainly donate to the WWP in the name of our project. I'll be sure to post a direct link to the WWP when I get it and let everyone know.

I will also be creating a "press release" about the TransAmerica Tour 2014 that can be shared with clubs all across the USA.

Thanks for the kind words and thanks again for your service. I did 21 years in the USAF myself.

If you can get it to Florida, I am sure I can come up with some volunteers

We are now turning our attention toward engine choices. I am thinking a 4 stroke gas engine would be the best choice due to its fuel economy.

Any suggestions on that?

Thanks,

Frank

Have you considered small gas like this- RCGF 15CC Gas Engine Version I'm not positive, but I think the reliability and fuel economy would be better than glow - wouldnt it?

Roger,

No plans to use a glow engine. They are terrible for fuel economy as you mentioned. Sig recommends a 20 - 25 cc gas engine for the Rascal 110. http://www.sigmfg.com/IndexText/SIGRC84ARFB.html

Gas is definitely the way to go for reliability and ease of use. Since 4 stroke gas engines are the most fuel efficient, we just need to figure out which one to use in the 20 - 30 cc range.

I see. The 4 stroke pump gas engines this size are pretty hefty so I assumed you were talking glow. Once again taught the pitfalls of assumption. FWIW, Ive been tinkering with some small 4 strokes lately, and here are some conclusions to consider - I believe the fuel economy to be only slightly better, the weight is a serious issue, and lubrication is problem on the weedy converts. The reason I mentioned 15 cc is because it is the smallest I think that would fly the airplane and you could transfer the weight savings to the fuel tank, but I also see the benefit to having the extra thrust too... Just my 2 cents.

So if this was your plane, what components would you use? Time to start building this plane that will be flying across the USA.

All we know right now is that we want to use a 2 or 4 stroke engine. Everything will be from the ground up designed for dependability and safety. What would you use? Don't be concerned about the cost as of right now. We'll worry aboyt that later.

Thanks,

Frank

Speaking of engines, how does this one sound for the Rascal 110? http://www.osengines.com/engines-air...522/index.html

You should look at the evolution engines.

We have looked at them. Matter of fact, we have looked at all of them. It's like looking at houses to buy. You just get tired of looking at finally just pick one.

The problem with EVOs are that they are either too small or too big.
