How to hit the Knife Edge Spin???

I don't know if this has been asked before but this single maneuver kicks my ars!

I figured out rolling harriers and hovering and such heck I can do the blender with consistency.

But doing the knife edge spin has so far been a very elusive proposition for me - need some help /tips.

Thanks,

Ronster

Enter an inverted spin, hold full down and full rudder with lots of power...

I'm sure there's other ways, but I was practicing lomcevoks this weekend and a couple times, I would exit the lomcevok into a knife edge spin.

It also depends on the plane Ron....i can do it all day long with Bob's 260, but my big ass yak wont do it no matter how hard I try, but my QQ yak would, and so did my buddies AW yak.

So basically - I think I am screwing up the entry?
Everytime I try it it turns into a inverted flat.

Use all the controls to enter (I use same side for upright entry), play the ailerons and power to establish, the zero out the ailerons to hold the position. Reducing power after establishing the K/E part drops the plane into a flat spin. Bipes hate even thinking about a K/E spin.

Agree with the type of plane. I cant get it to work with some but can do it all day with others. Some spin at 70 degrees angle whilst others do the full 90. That looks really cool and it descends much slower.

You need lots of torgue and some balancing on the ailerons to hold it in the right position.

What plane are you trying it with? Extras do it easy but my cap is hit and miss.

Re: How to hit the Knife Edge Spin???

Here is the best way I've found.
  • Climb vertical to a safe altitude
  • Back out of the throttle and yaw the plane to the right
  • When the plane starts to fall to the side give full down elevator and a lot of left Aileron
  • Get into the throttle until it starts rotating (usually about half)
  • Adjust the Ailerons to get the wings vertical (if it rolls on its belly you gave too much left and if it rolls on it's back you didn't give enough left Aileron)
  • Ease the left rudder in to get the nose up.
  • Once its got a good rotation you can add throttle and adjust the ailerons and rudder to get it tighter

Re: How to hit the Knife Edge Spin???

sometimes i try it like a hammerhead then when i get to 90 deg. i go opposite rudder full down elevator and blerp the throttle. if that dosent work...try pushing over the top to enter then full down elevator then square the attitude using rudder... does that make any sense??

I find that happens when you give to much rudder, give rudder to early, or not enough aileron. My 110" EF yak will do a nice one without giving any rudder.

This is what I do

Vertical up line
slow to almost stop
full left rudder, half left ail, full down
add power and bring the ail back to wards neutral as needed to keep in KE

Re: How to hit the Knife Edge Spin???

Yup. Usualy, the easiest way to enter one is doing a hammer head, and holding full rudder. As soon as the plane has passed the verticle, open up the throttle, burry the elevator stick forward, and use a little bit of aileron initialy, and as soon as it's locked in, slowly let go of a little bit of aileron, intil it is very tight. It takes getting used to with different planes, but with minimal practice, they're pretty easy to nail!
Have fun!
