Triple Tree's P-51 Mustang!

Triple Tree has a new full scale bird and it's awesome! This TF-51 saw action in Europe and will reside in the Triple Tree hangar for generations to come!

A P-51 Makes Triple Home

I've been talking to our friends at Triple Tree about the P-51 that just arrived. Pretty exciting stuff!

Here is what Mr. Pat had to say about the new P-51:

This airplane 75 years from now will be in the hands of very responsible pilots to fly and continue the history of the P-51 and the significance this airplane had for our country. We are proud to be a part of this and preserving something that can be shown to future generations. This is kind of a dream day.

More on the P-51:

TF-51 Gift to Triple Tree

For many years Triple Tree has dreamed of owning the crown jewel of warbirds, the mighty P-51 Mustang. Triple Tree already has the first three aircraft every aviation cadet flew during training during WWII - the Cub, the Stearman and the BT-13. The only airplanes missing were the AT-6 and the P-51. About a month ago we were notified that one of the world’s finest TF-51s was being gifted to Triple Tree! The TF-51 is a two seat, two complete cockpit version of the single seat P-51. The new Triple Tree aircraft started life as a P-51D and was later converted to a TF-51. It saw European theatre action and we are actively researching its history. It is one of only thirteen TF-51s left in the world and we believe it may well be the finest. It's not only a Triple Tree jewel, it’s a national treasure!

Thanks

Thanks to Mark at Triple Tree for shooting some photos and thanks to Mr. Pat and Triple Tree for scoring this killer warbird! Very exciting for the RC world and I can't wait to see it!

Well, that beautiful bird had to have flown in to Triple Tree with somebody at the controls.... Who was the lucky pilot? (Probably still sporting a cheesy grin!)

P-51

http://www.mustangsmustangs.com/p-51/survivors/serial/44-63865

This Mustang, "Tempus Fugit" (Time Flies) was owned by Tony Raftis, it served as a P-51D with the Royal Swedish Air Force before being sold to the Nicaraguan air force. Its restoration as a TF-51 two-seat trainer was only completed in 2006, being painted in this scheme only three months before Aviation Nation.

My dad, Sam Hart (who some of you knew) had about 350 hours in the P-51/F-51. He flew airshow routines in the F-51 in the Alabama National Guard - but he had much more time in the P-47 and the P-63 (which he said was a match for the P-51 - except it had no range).

Since both mom and dad are gone I'll tell the story he made me promise not to tell:

Dad graduated from Vanderbilt and flew P-47's with the first iteration of the " National Guard" the entire time he was there. They occasionally tangled with the P-51's flown by the Alabama Guard out of Birmingham. After college dad got a job with Rust Engineering and moved to Birmingham - where he joined the Guard and started flying their P-51's. One weekend they planed a big dogfight between the TN Guard and the AL Guard over north Alabama. Apparently it was a big deal and dad wanted to prove he was now part of the Alabama gang. He got into an intense 1 on 1 with a P-47 starting at about 22,000 ft that ended up below 10,000. He never said who won but suddenly the sky was empty and he had no idea where he was. After looking down for about 15 minutes he saw a small airstrip with a house nearby. He landed, saw a couple sitting on the front porch and walked over to ask where he was. They were nice enough and soon he was on his way back to B'ham. He landed at dusk just in time to call off the search party.

So, do the right thing: cough up a grand and have a grand time in a P-51 for an hour. I promise it's an hour you can recall anytime - and will always put a grin on your face.

To fly an aircraft with more than 800hp that has a VNE higher than 250kts, the pilot must have an FAA letter of authorization or type rating for the specific aircraft type. The minimum requirements to obtain a LOA are:

Possess at least a U.S. private pilot certificate with an appropriate category and class rating (e.g., airplane, single-engine land);
Possess at least a valid U.S. third-class medical certificate;
Have logged a minimum of 500 hours of pilot flight time;
Have completed one of the training requirements of subparagraph 5-1582B
Have logged 50 hours complex time.

I may have indulged in a little wishful thinking but all we can do is make a donation and ask. At last September's full scale TT fly in the CAF (or someone) was giving rides in a Mustang for $1,500/hour - $1,800 if you wanted to fly a bit from the back seat.
