Servo choice for 30cc to 100cc

Ok, I was talking to a few buddies at the field yesterday afternoon and a question came up about servos. Everyone involved flies 50cc - 70cc birds, mostly aerobats. One of the guys is just getting into a website business and is looking into bringing in a range of products that are nto covered in the market place. I offered to ask the question for him. (NO - it is NOT me who is considering it)

Here in Aus, we are limited in readily available servo choices. We have the usual Hitec, Futaba and JR choices (usually at a premium price), we also have a lot of the Cheapy Chinese choices such as PowerHd but we don't have a lot of choice in the "middle" brands such as Savox or Airtonics.

Sooo - here is the question (remember it relates to the common sizes of planes - say 30cc to 100cc).

What servos would you use?

I have planes in the size range that are fitted with the top brands (JR, Futaba and HiTec - but not the 7950 Hitecs) and all fly well. I don't like the "cheapy brands" (such as powerhd) for anything whatsoever.

What would you use?

spektrum, jr and savox is my only choice but bare in mind the lower savox and spektrums are no different than cheap powerhds or similar. look at any site advertising these brands and any servo thats not brass geared i will use depending on the model and servo power

Predominately Hitec here even the dreaded 7950. I have always had confidence in them even though I know the others Jr, Spektrum and Savox mentioned would probably be just as good. I also stay away from the cheap ones.

Futaba, SAVOX and Hyperion mostly. (In order of tiering)
My servo range comprises mostly Futaba S3004, S3010, S3051, S9072SB and S3072SB. I have a few SAVOX SC1251MG's and 1256TG's, Hyperion DS20UMD and FMD as well as DS16FCD's.

The only real cheapies I use are the Hyperion servo's. They're reliable.

Cheapies I've tried are PowerHD and Blue Bird and neither will be purchased again

Use Hitec, Jr ... Excellent servos.
Hear some good things about Savox too.

Hitec, JR, Futaba, and PowerHD. For the last year have been doing some side-by-side comparisons of the PowerHD titanium verses reasonbly close comparison Hitecs and so far the PowerHDs are on top of the heap. Not quite an apples to apples comparison, yet very close and very impressive when you consider cost.

I am not 100% sure that I would run PowerHD on anything over 27-30% though, but since I don't have anything larger than that I am good to go. I plan to run these hard this coming season and see if they continue to perform this strong.

Curious which Power HD and which Hitecs you are comparing. I tried some Power HDs 1218TH servos recently. They where very inexpensive and so far have proven to be reliable, but the precision is quite poor compared to the Hitec 7985s that I've typically run in 50cc airplanes.

The 1218th is the only Power HD servo I've tried so far and they've been OK (not great) but I'm, always looking for a reliable, inexpensive servo. I'd like to hear which ones you feel work well that would be suitable for a 50cc plane.

I dont think you can put the Spektrum and Savox servos in the same class as the Power HD's and such.
The Savox are getting great reviews. I have personally used the Spektrum 6030 and its a great servo. The other cheap clones cant be trusted. Let me say this, if you value your plane dont trust the cheap servos.
Just my opinion,
Jerod

I'm sure you realize that the Spektrum 6030 is a Savox?

airtronics makes some good servos. quality has not been a issue at all with the 4 i own.94780 has a ton of power and seems a lot quicker than the rating. Centering is very good.
I am impressed with savox also. all i will run for HV from here on out.
The power hd 1214 and 1218 have worked well on 7.4 V for me also.
