Coming: Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Build

So I got my credit card statement and there was a rather large charge on there from Dalton Aviation, which means that my 35% 260 kit is on its ways or soon to be. So, I'm going to be doing a build thread since this is my first Giant Scale kit to build. It's going to be a long build since I have to do the work at my parents house, which is in Texas. However, I don't mind any input from you guys and hope that you're interested enough to follow along.

Re: Coming: Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Build

Congratulations !!

I should be starting mine in a few weeks as well.

Considering Tony is in AZ, if he didn't send your kit early last week.. it will probably come after the TAS.

I'm cleaning up the shop and getting my building table ready.

I also am going to do a slow build.... in fact one very noteworthy builder once told me... "Sleepy.. to be successful.. take your time, and at least do 1 stick a day. And he was serious... even if you just cut one single stick of balsa a day.. it may take you a long time, but you'll always know where you are in your build.. it keeps you fresh... perhaps we can exchange notes along the way!

GOOD luck.. I just as stoked as you probably are!!

I am also just starting mine after months of delay. I believe I actuallly received the first kit Tony shipped last spring, but it arrived as the flying season began in Wisconsin and as such flying took priority. Now that our 9 months of winter has begun - time to start building. Unfortunately I do not have a digital camera so pics are out of the question but it will be good to have others at about the same stage so we can compare ideas and notes.

Count me in too! I ordered mine about 4 weeks ago so hopefully it got shipped before Tony went to AZ. Will be cool to have a couple of other guys doing the same kit at the same time. My first giant scale build also. Got the work table all done and just waiting on the kit. I'm pumped and cant wait to get started.

Re: Coming: Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Build

This may be a record!!
We could do a QUAD build thread!

Heck ya...

Also.. we can really see what the differences of weight the materials and method used would create!

BAD ASS!

A Flying Giants first....

The birth of a GAGGLE of Daltons!!

Boys we must make T. Russo proud!

And hey!!

We should set a loose goal to all meet up with them at the NALL!!

Who's in?

DA100 and Cans for me.
NALL would be fun but tough - vacation is limited and I already have the Pattern Nats in the plans for 07.

Re: Coming: Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Build

Well, I'm not going to be home again until Thanksgiving so if it hasn't gone out yet, it's no big deal.

I haven't decided what motor I'm going to put in mine. It's either going to be a 3W 106 SS on cans, a BME 115 on standard mufflers, or a DA 100 on pipes.

Power distribution is going to be an Emcotec DPSI 5 Mini if I go with Hitec 5955's all the way around (which is most likely). But if I decide to go with Futaba Digitals, then it's going to be the new Smart Fly Power Expander with the built in equalizer.

Re: Coming: Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Build

I have a DA 100 sititng waiting for the plane, but in 7 months that can change...
I also am considering cans for it.. but that could change as well.

Super 80 seems like a good choice.

Man... so many options...

Oh.... the best part of my build.... BIFF told me in the past that he would cover my Dalton....
Muahahahahahaha.... you bet I'll be taking advantage of that!!
(Can you say 47 color scheme!!)

It's been said that the ZDZ Super 80 on a pipe has just as much power as the DA 100 and plus you'll lose over a pound on the airframe.

Re: Coming: Dalton Aviation 35% Extra 260 Build

Yea.. I thought of this a while ago...
I actually posted this idea even before your thread.
BUT on my thread I got mauled... no one agreed with me... haha.

The thing is.. I'm not 100% convinced of the torque just yet.
I know it has the power... but I want to see the low end pull like a tractor.
I've seen the super 80 fly and its an impressive motor to say the least,
but I have been a single cylinder guy for quite some time, and I do see a difference with a twin.
My 3W 100b2 pulls like a raped ape... I mean scary power, and the extra 1lb dosen't seem like that big of a deal.. the wing loading is still sweet, so... man i just don't know.

I'm still on the fence.

I have the DA sitting on a shelf.. so I'll probably go with it...

I have a Blue head ZDZ 80 and it runs great and pulls my WH 260 around like a rag doll, so I know the Super 80 would have to be sick.... BUT.. for once I'm not going to be the guinea pig.

I know what you mean. When I bought my 3W 56, everyone said I should've gotten a DA 50 because you "loose" power with twins and the DA would be .75 lbs. lighter. But my 3W 56 will pull my 17.5 lbs. plane out of hover and my friends DA 50 can't pull his 17 lbs. plane out. But if you look at my engine choices, they're all balls out power.

Steve, that is a statement that you can take to the bank. I follow those same rules myself. It is very easy to get involed in other tasks that life throws your way. Doing this will keep you on track.
