Dave Patrick Extra 330L Mods

Hi everybody.

I have a DP Extra 330L that I have had for years, that I recently damaged and had to do some major repairs. I have rebuilt the fuse and am now working on the wings.

The r/h wing got most of the damage, and is toast, but the left wing is also damaged. I also have an Aeroworks Extra 260 that I have an extra pair of wings for.

I was wondering if the Extra 260 wings would work on the Extra 330L. The DP Extra has a wingspan of 78 inches and a wing area of 1200 Sq. inches, while the Aeroworks Extra has a wingspan of 85 inches and a wing area of 1270 Sq. in. It wouldn't take much of a modification to fit the 260 wings to the 330.

What does everyone think? Will this work?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards,

Dennis

Re: Dave Patrick Extra 330L Mods

Anybody have any idea what the wing incidence should be?

Should it be 0 degrees?

Regards,

Dennis

Dennis,

Did you get those wings swapped out?
What motor are you running on the DP?

Hi Gerald:

Good to hear from you again.

No. I am in the middle of repairing something else at the moment. I am having second thoughts about using the Aeroworks wings, and have just about decided to cut myself a new pair of foam wings with my CNC cutter.

I was running a ZDZ 40 on it before I banged it up, but the repairs have added some weight to it, so I will probably go with a DL 50. What engine are you running on yours?

Re: Dave Patrick Extra 330L Mods

Dennis,

Good to hear from you also. I am running a Brison 3.2 on mine swinging various 22 x 8 props. It will zing on up lines with a 22" prop. Usually I fly it on a Menz or Mejzlik, I am gong to try some Vess and Xoar that I have on hand one day. I run this on a J & H peacekeeper muffler. Those 2 above props run in the 6900-7200 RPM range if I remember correctly. The 50cc motor is sweet on this deal to me. I have a friend by a ZDZ 40 off of me and fly it on a DP Edge on a 20 x 8 it flew it pretty well you were just having to give it more throttle to do the things that require power were as you do not have to do this as noticeable with a 50cc motor. That DL 50 will blow my Brison out of the water with the numbers I see on that deal and to me the 50 is no slouch. You will be able to fly it at 3/4 throttle on up lines if you choose along with running a good liner throttle mix on any 50cc deal.
Here are some pics of various DP that I have saved off the net thru the years. The one with the custom tail feathers is mine from soneone who did this for me about 6 years ago out of Canada of R C U if i remember correctly. The other ones show were a flyer ran a can on their ZDZ.

I used to fly one of these in IMAC and I also have one that is brand new in the box.

When I flew it in IMAC only it flys great with the ZDZ 40. The balance with this motor came out perfect. If you are wanting to 3D this plane the Moki 2.10 or any 50CC engine would work just fine.

This is a very nice aircraft to start off with. In fact this year (2009) I will be flying one to get back into IMAC.

Where did you put your servos? I'm finishing an ARC(final version) with a ZDZ40 and thought I'd put all three servos in the tail. However I am also be using CF spars, LG and spinner so I'll have a little less weight forward than normal . Also I ditched all the aluminum angle braces and used CF tape on the motor box and LG box. All together I've dropped a full pound off the stock airframe so she should fly light.
While an older design, I still think its one of the best looking Extras made

Re: Dave Patrick Extra 330L Mods

Servos in the tail for the elevators, one in the fuse on pull-pull for the rudder, and throttle up front.

I had no problems at all with this setup. It worked great! Also at the time I was using a Hitec Receiver and a JR NI-CAD battery. This time around I will be using some Li-Po's and a Spektrum receiver.

I am not worried about weight really at all, with the ZDZ 40 you can fly IMAC all day.

Hope this helps!

Re: Dave Patrick Extra 330L Mods

I just ditched my EP DP 330L on a bizarre deadstick and damaged the left wing. I somehow managed to lose two of the end ribs in the crash and have no idea how I'm going to replicate them, aside from hacking open my undamaged wing and measuring them up. I'm not an experienced builder and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by the task, seeing as I've never even recovered something.

Luckily the wing tip was the only damage. Now I just have to man up and get this thing fixed somehow.
