today was the maiden, and i must say, i had some problems. my motor is not well tuned, the airplane was a tad bit nose heavy, there is a clear plastic peeling off the black covering, and when i landed, the landing gear torqued back and cracked.
here is the run down. took her off, once i took her off, and it is the maiden flight, i noticed plane wanted to immediately nose dive (LOL), not really, but she would pitch down, so once i got her high enough, i trimmed the elevator, and then she flew level. then i did not need to add any other trim, but for some reason, she was just not that responsive in flight, i would turn the aileron, and it almost seemed like there was a lag time to roll. don't know if this is from being nose heavy, or if it is from having servo arms with the linkage point at about 1 3/4 inch out from center. this is the farthest i have ever set up in a plane. of course, the further out you go, the less torque the servo has. then when she landed, on last moment, after i did flair, it slightly pitched down and i mean by few degrees and inches, whereby the left landing gear/wheel went back about 3 inches. i could not believe it had recoiled back to position, and for a second, i thought, wow, it is not broken, but once i got her in my arms, i could see these two problems: Landing gear broken and there is a clear film peeling off the black covering. i hope they did not put the covering on backwards??? i can fix the heavy nose by moving the two relion battery pack back by 4 inches or so at first, it would still be anterior to wing tube. then the landing gear, i was considering buying some from TNT, but the ones on their website are advertised for the 88 inch EF extra 300, i wonder if those would work on the 91"?? |

I've read that the peeling on the black ultracoat is an inherent issue.
The nose heavy thing seems unusual. I haven't flown mine yet but with the batteries on the motor box I'm still tail heavy even with a stock muffler. |

update, i added a pilot, to offset nose heaviness, i moved battery packs back, i adjusted carb by closing LSN by 1/4 turn and opening HSN by 1/2 turn,
then i fixed the CF landing gear with carbon fibre tape and epoxy resin, then i moved the servo control arms from the 1 3/4 hole to the 1 1/4 hole from center. |

I always adjust about a small flathead screwdrivers head thickness,Id say about a millimeter or two then recheck, when you get to the sweet spot the smallest adjustment can make a difference. This is how I set a gasser.Low speed-Adjust until engine can idle for 30 seconds with no stumble when going to wot,if it hesitates its to lean.High speed-I use a tach & lean until peak rpm then back off about 400 rpm, about 700 or so if the engine is new.The prop unloads a bit while in the air. Then you can adjust the high from there.

I have one question that is a general one but I am assembling my 91" right now, so I would be interested to know what you guys think.
We used to have mixture control on the F3A planes and it was nice as one could adjust the High needle in flight. Why isn't done today on these large planes ? We have so much room and the weight of an extra servo would be negligible. All we would need is an arm that could be fixed on the mixture control screw on the carb. Ideas ? |

update, flew this plane yesterday, twice, and she is awesome. i did rebind before taking her up, and i increased low rates throw, set expo at 15%. and she is no longer nose heavy after moving batteries back and installing pilot.
still having problems with the engine tuning. i was able to remove the cowl before flight, and i adjusted LSN and HSN to give me good transition and RPM max was about 6900. then reinstalled cowl, and after about 5 minutes of flight, engine shuts off, deadstick landing, and when i brought her back, engine would rotate but did not feel to have compression, very strange, i waited about 30 minutes, then she started up again??? WTH, i flew her again, and after 5 minutes or so, i sensed engine was losing power, so i landed her. anyone know what is wrong?? is it too lean now? |
