Basic and Sportsman yes. But Intermediate and up probably not so much...Its harder to compete with a Edge wing against Extras and Yaks.

I can't comment on the higher classes and it's true you don't see a lot of edges at the top end. But I've always liked the way Derek's edge flies.... Stalls (turns and spins) are a thing of beauty... I wonder also why they are not popular at the top...

From the edges I have flown and the Raven I am currently flying in IMAC which has a edge like wing point rolls and slow rolls are a bit harder. The plane just does not present well to the judges. Its easy to be 10 degrees off and you not know it. For me do perform Unlimited like snaps you need the max aileron and little rudder and elevator. (They do excellent snaps when set up right though)

A lot of it has to do with that edge wing though. Its easier to be 10 to 15 degrees off every roll element you do. And the biggest thing when it flies the presentation is just not there. I know a lot of it maybe me making the mistakes, but I have had several people tell me get another plane and I would be flying better.

The triple tapper Extra wing, compared to the double taper Edge wing, was implemented in full scale to create less wingtip stability, which resulted in a higher roll rate, and crisper and faster snaps. In reality, and aerodynamically, it is the Extra that has no wing sweep because the 1/4 cord point is straight, where as on the Edge wing, the 1/4 cord is swept forward. This may be why Kevin feels he is not hitting his marks precisely on his roll elements. Also, watch an Edge 540 on the downline and you may see a little more yawing than the Extra, or Extra-type wing because of this.

The advantage of the Edge wing is in 3D and Freestyle where the wing provides a better lifting surface in high-alpha compared to an Extra of the same weight, and with the same wing area.

Thanks for the comments on the Edge in the upper classes....I have been flying my Edge in Sportsman class and am planning on moving up to Intermediate next year...and still undecided if I want to fly my Edge or look for an Extra.. I think I am gonna try my Edge for at least part of the season next year to see how it goes.. Good info though....Thanks!!

The Sbach seems to be a hot aircraft at this time, but have not seen it mentioned in IMAC conversations. I take it that this means it is not quite up precision aerobatics?

You need an Extra!! Although you did kick some ass with that Edge this year. I think whatever you choose, it will fly just well in your hands.
