I used 1/16" birch ply, but next time I'm going to go with 3/32" or 1/8" lite ply. Weight is very close to the 1/16" birch, but the lite ply will be much easier to work with.

Well, serves me right for stating what I "hope" to get done. Things came up and I did not

Anyway, I did get some more sanding done on the fuse, beveled all the control surfaces so they are ready to install. Also finished the rudder, stab and hinged the rudder. The control horn blocks are all installed and I think they will work great!! Won't get to work on it now until Sunday but I'm going to work hard on the rest of the control surfaces. Next week I've got a two day scramble ahead for work, then the rest of the week is open Should be no trouble being ready to start some covering and getting paint matches late next week.

Had to leave town today, but I went in early to cut out my ailerons and elevators so that I could glue back on my counterbalances on the ailerons. My first time ever cutting out ailerons on foam wings.......dang I was nervous, but everything cut out nicely. I glued the coutner-balances back onto the ailerons with carbon tubes and gorilla glue to dry until I get back on Sunday.

Only thing I can see that would help is a slightly wider band-saw blade than I have to keep a straight line easier on those big arss wings!!!

More on Sunday when I get back.

It's getting close now and something nobody else will be flying!!! Thats the satisfaction of designing and building from scratch.

Everything glued on but the root ribs. Had some work and shop maintenance to do today, so did not get everything done. Just need to shave down some on the hinge hinge stock and sand flush, then I'm ready for root ribs and hinges.

Dumb question for the pro's, what's your tool of choice for drilling hinge pin holes?? I've always used a Dubro hinge point drill guide, but it is not even close to large enough for this size of plane.

I use the same drill guide but I made "extentions" from pieces of Al. You could use balsa or thin ply as well.

Pin and drill both edges together before cutting or carving the bevels. Both holes will line up. I find hinging to be one of the most unfriendly tasks right after sanding.

I also drill before shaping to stop the hole tearing up and its easier to drill a flat piece of wood than one which is triangular. I use a permgrit round needle file in a drill to make the holes instead of a regular drill bit. I find it makes a neater hole.
