Mixed batteries use on Sport plus power expander?

Hi, I've got a1 1/2 year old sport plus power expander on my Aeroworks 33% Extra 260 that has worked flawlessly, in fact it saved my bacon when one of my dual A123 Li Fe batteries went belly-up. I have ordered a new A123 pack from my LHS but they are back ordered and won't be back in stock for about 10days to 2 weeks. I have an equivalent capacitance (2300 MA h) Ni MH pack, any problems with my using that pack for redundancy till my other A123 pack arrives?
BTW, Great product.
Jay

No it will work fine. I asked the same q's awhile ago. I used a a123 and nimh on an eq10 worked fine. just remember to check voltage for the nimh with the a123 unpluged.

I use the eq 10
I have 4600 mah cap A123 on right and a 2300 mah A123 on left.

The 4600 on rt side, supply the ignition switch and the regulator, and is set @ 5.2 volts or less .

Also the 4600 mah battery also supplies the 2.4 ghz r1222 receiver with a Deans tee paralleled.
I use a Jomar optical kill in line too after the regulator.

No problems at all so far!
The numbers all look great 0-30 or less on 4 sats with no holds or fades at all.

Five ( 5 ) x 10 min flights takes out approx 1400 mah from the left 2300 mah size A123 battery.
While the right side A123 4600 mah battery uses 2300 mah out sharing the 2 loads.

KE rudder flights and rolling around do take some power out.

I wouldn't have a problem mixing the 5 cell nickel and A123 battery on those.
I have done that on both of the units you have mentioned.

Hi Patrick,
I saw your post and the way you hooked up the 1222. I am worried you may harm the Eq10 powering the receiver directly off the A123s. You might want to call me so I can help you with the correct way to hook up a 1222.

Re: Mixed batteries use on Sport plus power expander?

Hi Sukhoi1,
This is not an optimal way to hook up because of the different discharge slopes of the two batteries but if you are careful it should work. Basically what is going to happen is the Sport Plus will try to keep the battery voltages equal. So from 7.2V down to 6.6V the two batteries will discharge. At 6.6V you basically will be running off the A123 only since it does not go much below this. Please be aware once you are at 6.6V you will be drawing double the current from the A123 that you normally would with two A123s hooked up.

Re: Mixed batteries use on Sport plus power expander?

ok will do.

2300 battery is feeding the left side of both the eq10 and 1222 with y connection.
4600 is feeding the right side of the eq10 and the right side of 1222 and also tees to the ignition system.
Seems to be okay so far ??????????
I will call you ASAP

Warning:
Smart fly does not recommend doing what I have done below, so don't follow me.
There are items that can harm your system if you do this.
Thanks
