DW Foamies Yak 54- I was bored...

I was flying in front of the house, doing touch and goes off of my Frostie the Snowman X-mas lawn decoration when I had a thought... Now I love my Yak but in a little wind most of my foamies have some wing rock in a harrier. It dawned on me that a lot of the indoor foamies use those little winglets out towards the wing tip to cancel out some of that stuff. The Yak already has plenty of side force power in knife edge so this would be a more subtle aerodynamic experiment.

So as I was charging up my lipo to go over to the local ball park to do some serious flying, I hacked..err...carved up some winglets to give this a try. I decided to make these so they were a snug, slide on fit so I could put them on or pull them off without damaging my paint. They fit perfect and I headed out to the field to fly.

Upon launch I just flew normally and nothing seemed to have changed. I came down into an elevator and did a harrier low above the grass. The wings were locked in SOLID like I'd never seen before. I dragged that tail around at high alpha without having to even think about it. I really think these did something. After about a 10 minute flight of normal flying I landed and checked to see if they had moved or slid out-of-true... Nope! Still straight as an arrow.

Give this a shot if you have some scrap 6mm depron laying around. I am definitely going to do some more back to back comparisons to see what I did exactly and if it affected anything else. The DW Yak is already a really well-balanced foamie so I may have made something else a little out of wack.

Here's an easy to print template of what I did. Just be sure to make the inner cut-out fits snugly over 6mm foam. I made my winglets from 6mm depron.

Evan, here's my thread on the color scheme:

I tried that too and it works!

Here is an other way to achive the same thing... notice the particular geometry of the wingtips

I just ordered one of these just to mess around with. Not a bad price! Should be fun to play around in the gym for sure. I might make some mods to it after I fly it a little bit.
