Fromeco and Duralite

Ok guys time to replace my dualites. Now I personally have never had a problem with mine but now I see other kinds and not as much money. PLus I have heard from some pretty high ranking piolets that they don't care for duralites to much anymore. So who would you go with Fromeco or Duralite? And Question two can I use my Duralite Regulators and Charger with the Fromeco Lipos?

You can use your reg's but not the Duralite charger. I personally like the Fromeco batt's better because you can get basically the same battery with higher capacity, for equal or less cost. I personally like the Fromeco reg's and use them. I was a full on Duralite user, then switched to Fromeco. I only have one plane left with Duralites on board. That plane will have Fromeco equipment next season. I will be getting the new Ion Cube charger next. One stop shop right there.

I do know thast the Duralite packs have safety protection devices built into each battery pack as well as in their charger. Does Fromeco have this extra safety feature built into their packs?

Thanks, Bob Hudson

Re: Fromeco vs duralite

Duralite batteries do come with a circuit board that does two things:

1. 24/7 balancer so when your plane is sitting in your hanger the balancer constantly works. If one cell shows a higher voltage of 0.03v over the other, circuit will discharge that cell to match other cells voltage.

2. It has a built in over charge protection and it will cut the charge regardless of what your charger do.

I have a friend who bought the other brand battery from local hobby shop. He had a Super Brain charger that he had just bought not knowing what he was doing both were brand new to him, so sure enough he set the wrong number of cells and charged the battery to 8.9v before he realizes he didn't set up the charger right. If the battery had the overcharging protection it would've never gone up over 8.4v.

As far as the comment on very high ranking pilots go, not the ones I know of.

I have nothing against Fromeco batteries but as a Duralite sponsored pilot is my responsibility to explain the facts about Duralite in situation like this and I am sure that a lot of you may have not known what that circuit does in Duralite batteries.

Re: Fromeco vs duralite

Thanks for the explaination Reza. When I got my first GS airplane I went with Fromeco batteries. One of the reasons was that the Duralite charger seemed to be very slow. I think its .4A? Many times I charge my plane on the way to the field and I wouldn't be able to top off the batteries in the time alotted. Seems like overnite charging is what you would need to do. Can you use other chargers with the Duralite batteries without bad side effects?

Re: Fromeco vs duralite

dgfick,

You are right! That's because of the circuit not the cells! Circuit does limit the charge current to 0.4A. If you pump higher rate you can damage the circuit that's why Duralite charger is also limited to 0.4Amp charge rate.

On my QQ-Yak 102" I get 7-9 flights (10 min duration) out of one 4000 2s2p pack. I don't normally get more flights in one day but again if someone flys a lot and wants to fully charge the battery at the field this 0.4Amp will be a limiting factor.

There is always a trade off.

Thank you

I have used both brands. I like them both. Both have features that I like. But it is all personal preference as to what you want to use. My choice today is FromeCo.

OK, thanks for the clarification, I was wondering what the deal with it was. If I was more prepared it would work fine for me.

Oh thats easy..

Fromeco - costs less - more econimcal..
Better battery montoring - Better batteries - better circuitry..

Its the only logical choice IMHO...

Re: Fromeco vs duralite

In my opinion Duralites' Electronic switch with imbeded Regulator is an awsome product and when you set up your plane with all the components,, switch, batteries, powerbox.. the duralite system is a very nice solution.

I think though if duralite batteries have over protection circuitry, then they should not be sensitive to charging variations. SO I dont get it. If there is an overprotection circuitry, then technically we should have more freedom in using other chargers. Maybe a marketing STRATEGY..lool....I do like the duarlite charger since for ease of use and ease of mind.
