Yes, a few posts back I described my experience with the 31X12. I really wanted to use that prop too.
>>>>I gave the 31X12 Evo, non L a try on my 170 with RE3s. 30X13 turned 6480, so really strong combo. I really wanted to use the 31X12 prop to slow things down, and better downline speed, but the loading is much higher than the 30X13. It spins approx 400 RPM slower than the 30X13 Evo. The weird thing is, in the air it seemed to unload ok and not be too bad. I felt it was just a little too much load for the 170 though, and IMO it wasnt real happy with it, and the upline suffered.>>>>>>

When I first got the DA 170 on RE3s, everyone was running Mej 30X13 on it. I was running a 32X10 Mej on my 150 on Greves at the time. I set out to "prove" that the 30X13 was not the best prop. (I thought the 32X10 would be) What I ended up proveing to myself, was not only was the 30X13 the best prop for the 170 / RE3s, but that the best prop for my 150 was the 30X12 instead of the 32X10 hahahahaha.
When I tried the 32X10 on the 170, it was a dog. Terrible upline, it did slow everything down nicely, including the down line, but for me it was all in the snap. With the testing I was doing I noticed that with the 32X10 on the 150 and 170 (both were Aeroworks 260's), when I would initiate a snap, it would rotate a bit, and then go into auto rotation. It made it hard to stop the snap where I wanted, because with the delay to start autorotation, it would change the timing to stop the snap. With the 30X13 on the 170, and the 30X12 on the 150, it would consistently do a nice tight snap where autorotation would start right when you initiated the snap controls. I still have not found a better prop then the Mej 30X12 (150) and 30X13 (170). Once I try the Falcon though, ya never know. I am looking forward to trying the 30X14 Falcon.
Bill

i have a 30 x 13 mejzlik and it pulls it well, unlimited vertical, and slows it down enough to land better than the 32 x 10. only issue i am having is the personal discovery i have made (based on my shallow knowledge) that the pipes on my plane take away from mid-range, and it makes it hard for 3d stuff on this plane, especially hovering. it is punchy, and i guess, this is case with most tuned pipes.

Yea, in my experience you can get a good tuned pipe combo to the point where it has a very good mid range transition for precision flying. There is always that little spot where it transitions on to the pipe, unfortunately, that spot seems like it is right at the spot where you need precise control for hovering etc.
Mufflers and cans always seem like a better choice for non precision flying.

It's been a few years and the video I had is not longer available. I had absolutely awesome smooth mid range that I demonstrated at the time. Look in your low end needle, throttle servo arm and throttle curve. You could get to an awesome mid range. Takes a little bit of playing but doable.

Well, I picked up a DA-170 from a pawn shop that looks almost new.
Called DA with the serial number, it was shipped with all the up dates when it left DA, and it still is under warranty till December 2013.
I ordered some 14" header.
Removed my excellent running DA-150 on RE3's with 12" headers from my Hangar 9 Sukhoi and installed the 170.
Wow.
The 150 was getting 6000 rpm with a Vess Stealth carbon 32C.
The 170 is getting 6450 rpm with the same prop.
Major increase in pull, and low ends seems a lot stronger.
Just playing around with some throttle curve, since there wasn't much rpm change from idle to about mid stick.
The Vess was really loud with the 150, but it is really, really, really loud with another 400+ rpm's behind it.
Not bad for a $650 DA-170.

That would be way rich for here in Mesa Az. We are about 1200 ft above sea level and mine are perfect at high 1 7/8ths, low between 1/2 and 3/4 turns out but a touch lean towards the half side.

Ok, I'm basically sea level being just outside of Atlantic City.
So my setting would be richer then yours.
Thanks

Sorry about the mail box.

That's a great starting point. You may end up leaning the low end. Just be sure the engine won't quit if you zap the throttle, basically don't run it too lean.

there's no hesitation its tuned in really well all you need is a little bit of throttle curve and you're in business. It sounds really awesome you're low and is right on.

Thanks.
The thing that sucks is the radio really doesn't have throttle curve.
It does in heli mode, but not aircraft mode.
I'm messing with expo on the throttle and maybe I'll have to mess with servo arm / carb arm lengths.
Radio is a Futaba 7C FASST system.

Time to upgrade that radio; you have come to its limits.
