Re: DL-30 / DLE-30

Some will do it if they have a clear view of the fuel line and can see when gas gets to the carb. I do it when I forget to turn on the ignition, no bark in 6 or 8 flips and I start looking around.

Re: DL-30 / DLE-30

Takes some rpm to retard tie ignition for starting..If you choke it with the ignition off you can fill the cylinder with gas, then a lazy flip will hit you with 28 degrees BTDC...Best to choke with the ignition ON .....
but I;ve only been doing this for about 65 years, what do I know...O&R 23. 1946.....Nylon prop, Phillips 66 fuel..

O&R 23...I have one of those handed down from my Dad, has a champion glow plug in it as it was converted from ignition.

That is what I thought, ignition on. I am not going completely crazy then.

Ignition on, choke on, throttle at fast idle, flip until pops, choke off, flip until it starts. Pretty much S.O.P.

Re: DL-30 / DLE-30

I have a fairly long fuel line so I turn the prop about fifteen turns with the choke on and ignition off....then I flip the ignition on and she usually pops in 2 or three flips....then choke off ,throttle to idle and she starts in one or two flips. This works best with my setup. This is for the first start of the day...after that I skip step one.

Re: DL-30 / DLE-30

I do one flip choke on, ign off if the engine has recently run. It takes a few flips to start it without choke, and if I have the ign on it starts on that first flip making it semi wet and then it takes some flipping to get it going.

The oneflip ign off rewards me with a running engine in 2-3 flips max.

Choke on, ign on is foolproof, but nothing wrong in experimenting a little. Every engine is different.

I have the sidecarb version. turns a vess 20a @ nearly 7k. Took a gallon and some careful adjustment to keep it from dying upon touchdown. A smooth landing didn't kill it, but the slightest bump would make it die. Droplets in the intake/reed?
It's still a bit rich on idle/low rpm, but if I lean the low end further (a bladewidth a time) it gets lean in the midrange making the throttlestick feel "soft/mushy". Doesn't quit, but it feels a bit scary when hovering.
Any ideas?

Lars.

Try checking the timing mount and make sure it is not moving, check ign batteries, check for arcing from the sparkplug wire to the engine case

I had the same basic problem, thought the aircraft had a complex and just needed my total attention "just like a KID" well one of my club members suggested a slightly heaver prop to carry the flywheel effect on the engine. I tried this and have not had a landing stall since.

You can also bump the idle up a tad till she breaks in.

+1. 20x6 is the best prop I've found for this engine.
