Ok, so now I'm going to start on the fin and rudder.
On this airplane I'm going to "honeycomb" or core out all the flying surfaces. On the last 126" Extra I did this and saved or removed a total of 24 oz of foam. With this plane it might be a little less because the wing is thinner so I guess we'll find out.
I first started this method of honeycombing way back in the early '80's when I was building pattern planes. The idea just sort of evolved over time when I was trying to make wings as light as possible and still retain the accuracy of a foam core. It works real well, it is more work for sure but the weight savings are worth it in my opinion.
Here is the stock fin/rudder weighing in at 4.1 oz. Also a shot of the template that will be used to make the cutouts.

yep, all the balsa sheeting is true.......stellar kits, and stellar airplanes. dont get me wrong, im not saying "dont buy a carden" i would say "buy a carden if you can" if you cant, you can always wing it........pun intended.

Alright, so the first step in making the cutouts is to make a hole in each bay. I do this by heating up a metal rod with a torch and buring a hole in each opening. You don't want the rod too hot and for the smaller openings you have to make sure you push the rod in nice and straight. This part goes pretty quick and is easy to do!

Ok, now it's time to start cutting foam! I use a little home made hot wire, it's about 8 inches long with a loop on the end and a hook on the other. The wire goes through the hole in the foam, hook the other end through the loop and away you go.
To power the whole thing I use an old "Variac" variable transformer. You might be wondering what all those brown spots are on the power supply. Let just say, don't ever put a full can of 3M77 on a wood stove, 'nuff said!
Once you get going and "get the hang of it" cutting out the openings goes pretty quick. It took me about 15 minutes to do this peice.

I made the mistake when i was younger of wondering what was inside of a can of spray paint as well. Lets just say that at the time mom and dad were not happy, and I'm pretty sure my Playstation rights were taken away for a week or so. Mind you Playstation was very important to me when I was 11 or 12 years old.
