Question
Pondering a first true Scratch Build...

Well, I have finally come to a point where I am ready to take on a new project. Winter is closing in, and my work bench's are bare.

I have always wanted to tackle a true scratch build from plans, and figure its as good a time as any. I have been poking around at some of the sites that offer plans, but I have not really found that plane that has really grabbed my attention yet. Most the plans from RCM plans are vintage, too small, or the same things I use to look at when I was a kid before the internet, when you actually had to hold something called a magazine, and hand turn the paper pages

I want to build a 50cc or larger airframe. Maybe a biplane. My interest is more in line with IMAC style than anything right now, or similar. I like the MXS-R a lot, but not sure about any good plans floating around yet. I have fallen in love with the Yak 54 over the last few years, but feel like I need something different, but at least as good of a flyer.

So I thought I would throw out a thread here, in hopes to find some links or resources to plans avaliable out there that I have yet to come across. I will most likely do a build thread as well.

What would you build if you were to do a scratch build in a 50cc or bigger design? And are there plans available for it?

Trying not to be too much of a smart @ss but you're talking plans build not scratch build. A true scratch build is drawing your own plans.

Wendel Hostetler has some Extras and a Diablo. http://www.hostetlersplans.com/ Maybe one of them would suit your needs.

I was thinking the same thing

However, what would be cool is to take one of the old plans planes like the hostetler and bring it up to modern day technology standards and design, weight, materials, etc. What kind of plane are you really interested in?

Sheesh, just cant win around here

well anyways, I kinda mentioned what my interests are on the first post. Thanks TomCrump for that link, there's a few good plans there.

I do have TurboCad and am fairly capable with it. Ive drawn up a couple things for a pattern plane, but am more interested in the giant scale aerobatic type plane right now more than pattern. So I could and have been considering drawing up my own design (hence the title) but figured I would see if there were some plans floating around already done that might be of interest first.

Mike.. THAT was a great series and a great build. I think it was before the internet. I know I couln't wait until the next AMA issue came out. I also think I have the original articles around the house here somewhere. So cool I can almost tell you live now.

Just want to say thank you for all the efforts then. I know it was inspiring for myself back in the day.

And yes it would be cool to see that plane come to life again.

Dang, thanks man. I completely forgot about that thread. I grabbed the plans that were posted there, and never even looked them over

I'll revisit them for sure
