I wasn't planning on it. Do you think that they are needed?

Re: Another Dalton ML Extra 300 Build

Wellllll, I guess that is a matter of opinion and preference. I went through a lot of build threads here and looked at a bunch of them. Lots of guys are putting them in. I used 1/64 lite ply to make them and put them in Brendans Dalton MEL. I didnt figure it could hurt anything by doing it and could only possibly help.

I'll check your build to see what you did.
Thanks

Re: Another Dalton ML Extra 300 Build

I didnt do a detailed build due to a lot of others doing them, I learned a lot by looking at the others and gave me ideas as to stuff. I only followed up on it because of the article that Wayne did about me building a plane for Brendan. https://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/...ad.php?t=44937

Here is a pic below I found so you can see what I did. Its just little triangles you can cut and glue them across the joint in the corners.

Hopefully with the soft mount you will see reduced servo gear train wear and battery drain. Always a bonus.

Assuming it works that will usually follow. I was amazed what the smoothness of electric does for the above. I fly pattern mostly. A glow powered pattern plane even with a soft mounted engine uses about 200 to 250 mah per pattern flight. The same pattern flown with electric only uses about 50 mah, and yes the servos last much longer.

Re: Another Dalton ML Extra 300 Build

Thats a huge difference in battery draw. In my Yak I have a DA150 on Greves and I fly the Intermediate sequence. After 2 sequences (normal flight during a contest I use about 260 mah) That is with 2 servos per aileron, 1 for each elevator, 2 rudder and 1 throttle. I have the servos matched in my transmitter (14mz). Hopefully you can post your results after your done if dont mind.

I will definiitely post my results with the soft mount. 260 seems really low. I wonder what others are uysing. You are only usuing 260 with 3 more servos than a pattern plane, and likely more powerful servos at that. What size battery packs are you using?

Here's the deal with the gas twins in my eyes... most people look at a DA150 at idle and see all the ailerons shaking... ok, go to a slightly high idle and everything smooths out. The twins and 4 cyl. motors are very good at canceling out vibration from off idle to wide open. A single cylinder YS170 has a never ending amount of vibration because of it's single cylinder design. This is why a soft mounting system isn't necessary on a giant scale plane.

Most of your flying is higher than idle and you will reduce more vibration by properly balancing your rotating mass, spinner/prop. P-factor and torque effects are drastically different on a 40% airplane than a pattern plane. You will spend more time trimming one than you would ever think. Shims as thin as 1/64th are necessary to properly set up the thustline... I'm not sure how this will work with a soft mount with the ability of the motor to flex on the mount.

I think it is great that you are moving into a similar aspect of precision flying! I can tell you that the Dalton airframes fly very true. When you are ready I'll shoot you my baseline program for the daltons as a starting point. You flying 12X?

My current Dalton ML300 has about 525 flights on it and the only cross bracing I've broken were due to my handling of the plane. I typically use about 400 mah per flight flying the advanced sequence 3+ sequences per flight, with 8 8711's.

Re: Another Dalton ML Extra 300 Build

I'm using (2) 2300 mah A123 packs and no regs. I usually fly 4 times without charging. I can stretch it to 5 but the A123's charge so fast with my CellPro that it is easy just to recharge.

MattyMatt looks like he is getting similar battery life on his set up considering he is flying a busier sequence and doing 3 sequences instead of 2. Matt I would be interested in your baseline set up as far as degrees of throw and expo settings. I am also using a 14MZ so I can't just load the problem...

A lot of people are flying much bigger packs I think. At that draw unless you fly 10 flights it would seem like unneccessary weight.

Re: Another Dalton ML Extra 300 Build

I have never seen the need to run the 4600's To much weight. I also run a 2300 on my ignition and it seems to drain at the same rate at the flight packs. All the packs are usually at 60% when I go to charge them. From there it's about 30 minutes to charge all 3 with my cell pro.
