Extra 300 rebuild

I have an old sig extra 300xs that I will be rebuilding and modifying. It's bone stock, with an fpe 2.4 up front. I plane to modify the electronic configuration, change the engine setup, add cowl baffling, and recover it. Pictures coming later today.

Here are some pictures. I'm having some trouble getting the rest of the covering off. The old covering just split into two layers and only the top layer came off.

I plan to do the airplane with light blue/black covering. Any simple scheme ideas?

Looks like this won't help you much now, but nest time if you use a heat gun and pull slowly the covering will not separate and will come off leaving clean wood underneath.

I'll still give it a go. Maybe something will happen.

Got some work done today. Got started covering the wing. Also made some patches in the balsa sheeting on top of the fuselage. Also painted the canopy.

Sanded the patches on the tail and fuse. I also covered half the bottom side of the wing. Got a new cowl. The old one was in sorry shape.

I finished up with my modifications to the tail section and covered it. I tried out towerhobbies towerkote to cover the airplane. It's pretty good. Just as good as higher quality monokote. The only drawback is that the color range is limited. I covered almost the rest of the fuselage. Now, I just have to cover the bottom. I got two new power HD servos today for the ailerons, both with 180 oz.-in. of torque. I also cut the cowl for the engine, but forgot to take pictures. Once I finish covering, I plan to start with the wiring and fuel system. I just got a new switch for the servos/ignition.

I finished covering the fuselage today. Now, I just have the second half of the wing to go. The elevator, rudder, and throttle servos have been mounted. I mounted the engine, and installed an rcexl ignition optical kill. I changed the location of the receiver to go under the canopy, and the tank is going to be moved to where the receiver typically goes on this arf. I moved the tank back because I moved the engine 3/4 inch forward, and it was nose heavy even before I moved the tank. I mounted the cowl, but I still have to put the stripe on it. The prop is a 20x10 master airscrew scimitar. It's a lot lighter than the previous apc 20x10 prop (see picture). I'm aiming to have it done by saturday, so I can get out to the field by sunday. I still have to plumb all the lines (I have to wait until my fuel T from chief aircraft comes; it should be here tomorrow.

It flies well. It's a great airplane to get you started with IMAC. I'm trying to learn some basic and sportsman sequences.

I'm also going to set up a flaperon. I thought I might as well try it. On approach, I'm practically stalling the plane all the way in because the runway isn't super long, and I would have to go much faster to get a really smooth landing. With my vintage pattern plane, as soon as I know I'm committed to a landing, I cut the engine before touchdown to get it slow enough. Hopefully the flaperon function will allow me to land a bit more stable.

Thanks. I finished the plane just an hour ago, but my work room is a mess and my plane is surrounded by tools and I want to get a clean picture of it. Tomorrow I'll get it outside and show the finished product, before and after.

Finished. Total work time was approx. 20 hours. IMO, I think I did a decent job, but it's not perfect. I haven't covered anything of this size yet. I'll fly it tomorrow, flight pics and vids to come.
