Need tips for making wheel pants

I have seen someone mentioned how to make wheel pants out of balsa wood!

Did anyone try to make his own wheel pants? Any tips?

The plane is 35% yak.

Thanks in advance!

I made wood pants on my Jungmann build. Light ply sides and balsa core. Nothing to it really. If you want really cool ones look at the CL stunt models they are always wood.

What makes em "the best you've seen"? Are they sturdier? I'm really curious as I need to purchase a couple sets and I guess these would work as well as any others.

I am glad you asked....

most Wheel Pants out there have a hard point where they bolt up to the strut... most of'em have a cheezy piece of wood poorly bonded to the interior of the wheel pants... and eventually they delam and the pants crack at the edges of the wheel pants and at the front and back of the cutout.....

the Great Planes 38% Extra wheel pants are superior because they incorporate a hardpoint within the lamination... so it won't peel up at the edge nor delaminate. Additionally, they made the hardpoint eliptical so there are no corners to create stress risers... and notice.. the hardpoint extends beyond the wheel cutout.... so it inhibits cracking at those corners too....

I am tempted to buy 5 pairs just to have for future planes....

Why thank you very much Mr. Mithrandir! I may just have to order a couple sets for my PAU Edge and My Dalton.....the price is certainly right! Do you do anything on the "outer side" to prevent them from flexing....like gluing a piece of ply and having the axle continue into it? Thanks again!

NAw...

I just knock out the T-Nuts and drill a new hole if needed.... maybe grind a little extra clearance
around the axle if needed.....
