As Flyinggiants.com continues down its interwebz journey, the website (now in its 7th year) has witnessed many things change. From the radio equipment we use, the companies who supply us to the motors and motor sizes available to us. As I sit here and monitor the journey we are all taking together, I have watched many of us slowly start to eyeball scale airplanes. Don't get me wrong, 3D is here to stay, develop and expand and FG will always be the site to expose, promote and adore all things 3D! But I think it's time that we shine a little light on the other side of this awesome hobby. Scale Airplanes!
If you haven't noticed, we have added a few new forums to FG in the past week or so, and we would like to point them out. Together as a community we can start to build a great "Scale" resource to use and share. If you click the "forums" button and scroll down, you will see a new main header: "Scale Airplanes and Techniques". This main forum has five sub headings: -Scale Civilian Planes -Scale Warbirds -Scale Build Project Logs -Scale Techniques and Tricks -Scale Event Photo/Video Coverage These forums should cover all the different aspects of the scale world. FG will attend a few of the major scale events and cover them like they have never been covered before. Instead of scale pilots/builders waiting six months to see their 10,000 hour scratch-built warbird in a magazine, FG will have 25+ detailed photos and some videos up usually the same day! We are going to bring the exciting and friendly vibe that FG is to the Scale world. It's about time. So all you closet Scale/Warbird guys, get to posting and join the ranks of Crazy Karl and his 50% Pitts Pyton M12 Scratch Build or Damon "dag214" and his insane 257" B-36D Scratch Build. Or if you are building a civilian or warbird ARF and you're going to "scale" it out, please share your tricks and tips. I really think we can add a whole new level of fun to our web community. Heck, maybe this year we add "lowest, fastest, inverted warbird pass" to the Huckfest Tour! Guys, please enjoy the new scale forums, adding some new flavor will be a lot of fun!

Well I don't think its a secret that aerobatic flyers also make the the best scale/warbird/jet pilots.

I've started going to warbird events in the last 2 years and they are very neat. Here's a shot of my TF P-51 at Warbirds over the Rockies (2012).

Okay -one more from Warbirds over Iowa 2012. It is hard to turn off the 3D fun and fly "normal" at a scale event. I promise to do better in the future.

Scale airplanes and warbirds are one of the fastest growing segments of our hobby. I love the aerobatic side of things but its nice to get out and fly as close to scale as you can, while doing a 100 MPH pass right down the runway
![]() Here are a couple pictures of my Mustang from last years Warbirds over the Rockies event.

Warbirds are a riot! I fly 3D, but I will say trying to formation fly with 3or 4 other warbirds takes ALOT of concentraion!
I had my Yellow P-47 painted into a game- IL2. Last edited by 401HITMAN; 01-17-2013 at 11:04 AM. |

I fly 3D and precision but guess what... nothing I dream of more than having a good 100cc sized Fokker D.VII
Used to fly a lot of warbirds back when I started in the hobby. Good times, glad to see more expansion on this epic branch of the hobby!

You know I'm in........I put up in the past on FG my build of a Scaled out TF P-47 in Captured German colors.
I'm hoping to afford the new TF FW-190 and do another unique scheme. I think I could nock it out in under 3 months if I can get one. Let alone the F-16 jet I'm not working on and the 122in FW-190 D9 I'm not working on (I have them up in storage, waiting for time to work on them is all) I'd love to attend the Scale meets with FG.

Don't forget there are some decent scale aerobats available as well. The Hangar 9 Beast is already fairly true to the scale and can be detailed to make it much closer.
Then there is the new Krill Extra 330SC series.....working on one of those now. I love scale stuff, but also love flying aerobatics, so the combo lights my fire! Earle |
