Question
GYRO IN 100cc AEROWORKS EXTRA300
will putting a gyro in a giant scale 3D plane progress its 3D caqpabilities? will it even work? how will it perform?

It will help you 3D the plane better perhaps, but it's not legal for competition.
Gyro's are a crutch. Might as well learn how to fly the plane yourself. Otherwise, you might as well have a buddy fly and watch. I'm not a Gyro fan. I believe the best gyro is the one between your ears. Learn how to use that one, and you will be miles ahead. What's the fun in having a plane fly itself? Might as well go with a quad copter. |

Though not a gyro fan and never used one myself except on a heli, however seen guys use gyros on Jets for 3D like the videos shown below:-

ive been trying to 3D for 4 years now and can only do a harrier and a knife edge! ive tried small planes and big planes. i can hover on a simulator but not a real one

Many years ago I put 2 gyro's in a 100cc 540 edge. It was quite a challenge and learning curve to get the radio programmed correctly. I had 3 positions: off/on/and heading hold, rudder and elevators. I don't think I'd do it again but at the time the gyros would do enough to hold dead on slow rolls as far as I wanted to stretch them out. It would probably give 3 torque rolls without any input what so ever. I think they could possibly be used as training wheels for 3D. I had a blast messing around with them. Once correctly set it seemed to really slow down the correction time and allow more time to get on to whatever your trying to learn, I think a bit easier, maybe. I won't mention who I got the idea from but it would probably surprise you who has used them. Most that speak out about using them haven't tried gyro's, its not manly to suggest. Buring more gas is cheaper and probably better. Try them and find out, then you can judge Walt

Yes it can be a training aid. Use it as a tool and not a crutch, you should be able to lower the gains as you progress. Have self control and lower the gains. Or you can use it forever as not everyone can retain the muscle memory do certain things. Its your choice. Remember people scoffed at the idea of a microwave, 2.4 yadayada. Your choice, your plane, use it responsibly, and dont let others tell you it shouldnt be used.
Now on the other hand I dont see a need for a gyro on big planes. Micros there a great asset. On my big heli I have helicommand and it incorporates a bailout. People scoff at that. Screw em. The idea of having a switch too rescue the heli or a switch thats just a throttle cut, I prefer rescue. I use it as a last resort. So like a gyro in a plane I use it as aid and not a crutch. It helps me progress and it saves me money. |
