Dave, I'm considering pipes for my 40% Extra GP176, are there smoothpipes coming?

Hi Bill, I can't comment on the exact power gain until testing is completed but I think 350-500 RPM is the target power gain with a smooth transition.

That's great news Dave! I'm in no hurry, I'll wait. Really enjoying the 104 Slick with the 120 on pro-flows, it's awesome!

OK. This may not be an appropriate place to ask this but here goes:

I have a brand new (4 gallons through it now) DA 120/Pro Flow combination that is giving me fits. I cannot get rid of SEVERE RPM HUNTING right around 1/3 to 1/2 throttle (hard to tell the actual carb position because of the throttle curve). In this throttle range the RPM fluctuates severely. It is unusable.

When I talked to DA about it their reply was "If you are running any canister exhaust you will have this issue. You cannot get rid of it; only reduce it."

They suggested 4 things:
-change to a standard (non-canister) muffler system
-put a larger prop on it (I'm running a Falcon 29x9 C.F. prop)
-SHORTEN THE HEADER LENGTH
-try a snorkle on the carb

They went on to say that KS canisters minimize this RPM hunting (bit do not eliminate it).

HELP!!!!

When measuring the header length (recommended to be 11" for this engine/canister combo) do you cut the header to exactly 11"; knowing that there will be an additional 1/4" in total length because you don't want the header touching the canister....so you will allow about a 1/4" gap in the coupler area.....or do you allow for this and actually cut the header to 10 3/4" or so....

I was appalled when DA stated that you cannot eliminate the RPM hunting when using canisters. I have followed this thread and found no reference to anyone having this issue. Indeed, the many positive comments on this thread was the main reason I elected to go with this engine/canister combo.

DA was good enough to send me a new carb, but this did not help the RPM fluctuation at all.

Yes I have tried adjusting the needles. Nothing seems to help.

Thanks for any input. I am pretty upset as this engine is quickly becoming a very expensive paper weight.....totally useless for me.

Jim

Have you tried a different throttle servo?

Also you may want to get rid of the throttle curve,,, its not needed when running proflows.
