Re: Red Aero RC - 50cc MX2 "Gary Ward Scheme" Build.
I found this diagram on Gary Ward's Airshow site. Shows all the lettering.
We did the green stripes on the bottom of the wing because it replicates the full scale. |

Trial fit of cowling and spinner. Not bad at all!

Choke leaver is easy to reach and hidden from view at the same time. It worked out really nice. I like for things to be simple but effective.

The DA-50 cut-out is nice and neat also. If I were using a canister, installation would be even less obtrusive. As it is, I'm OK with it. While sitting in the pit area, it'll hardly be noticeable. Nice air flow over the head here.

Re: Red Aero RC - 50cc MX2 "Gary Ward Scheme" Build.
Turning my attention back to the radio install, I've hooked up my fuel tank, optical cut-off, switches, and receiver. At this point, it looks like a nest of wires. I'll button it all down when I've positioned all the parts inside. I'm trying to decide on battery location because I'm not sure where CG will be located.

Re: Red Aero RC - 50cc MX2 "Gary Ward Scheme" Build.
Now, for the prop and spinner fit. I'm throwing on a Vess 22 B for the test fly. I think this will give me nice results, but I won't know for sure until we fly it. I'll try several different props until I settle into the one that works best for my flying style.
But wait, I forgot to put on the spinner back plate. At this point, It's easy to get ahead of myself. I start thinking about if I can have it ready before the weekend. |

I had to trim a little off the spinner in order for it to fit over the large profile of the Vess prop. Easy task with a Dremel tool.

Re: Red Aero RC - 50cc MX2 "Gary Ward Scheme" Build.
I've buttoned-up everything inside the engine box, So I'm ready to close her up. The cowling mounting screw holes on the bottom weren't pre-drilled into the cowling.
I took some 3" painters tape, place it on the fuse side to overlap the tab and blind nut. Punched a hole in the tape to mark the center of the blind nut, folded the tape back, but still attached to the cowling, installed the cowling with the top screws, folded the tape back to overlap the cowling, drilled a pilot hole where I had marked it, widened the hole with a larger bit, and installed my bottom cowling screws. Perfect. |

Re: Red Aero RC - 50cc MX2 "Gary Ward Scheme" Build.
I used the Slimline wrap-around style Pitts. Only muffler holes needed were for the exhaust tubes. If I had cut the tubes, I could have only had small openings, but I decided to leave the muffler tubes long. May come in handy on the next project.

Re: Red Aero RC - 50cc MX2 "Gary Ward Scheme" Build.
I think your cowl cut outs look great. I am considering this project / MXS-R in yellow Breitling trim (I presume it is the same airframe as you have)/ DA-50R with Slimline Pitts style muffler. I have this power/muffler combination in a Aeroworks 260 and have about 95 hours in the aircraft with zero issues.
Is your airframe the same as the yellow MXS-R in Breitling trim? |
