Indoor foamy help DW foamy /fancy foam
I'd like to set up an indoor foamy so i can practice over the winter. I need a good place to start.
I see DWfoamies has a 28" that weighs 3.5-4.5 ounces. Fancy foam has a 34" that weighs in at 5oz. an extra four inches of wingspan for an extra 1/2oz.? Point me to the right plane with the right equipment. Can I use any of the equipment off my 38" yak to outfit an indoor plane? My setup is below. Why do indoor foamies with 34" wing spans weigh 5oz and my 38" wingspand weighs 15oz? Here's my set up DW yak 38" wingspan. 15oz Scorpion s-2215-18 10 prop apc 10x3.8 4 hi-tec hs-55 servos Hi-tec micro 5s receiver Thunder power 1320mAh 3 cell li-po Thanks Mark |

Mark, for an indoor foamie, you will have to buy new equipment to make your weight goals.
For example, on my DW Yak jr <-- I used an Eflite Park250, GWS 8X6 10A ESC, 460mah 2 cell battery, and some 5g servos.(hs55's weigh 8g (9g or 1/3 oz extra weight) And my plane weighs 4.2 oz.(could have built it lighter, but didn't wanna put the effort into it) Hope this helps! Chris |

Re: Indoor foamy help DW foamy /fancy foam
So even though the FF and my DW are close to the same wingspan I still have to buy different equipment? well that sucks. How come i didn't buy a receiver and servos that would have worked for both in the first place. I mean to say that why didn't I buy 5oz servos in the first place. If their good enough for a 34" plane why not a 38" plane? Is my reciever too big too?

Re: Indoor foamy help DW foamy /fancy foam
Mark, there are several things to keep in mind. You're going from a foamie that is designed to fly at 13oz. to a plane designed to fly at 5 oz. A DW 38" is built with 6mm foam and the FF is made outta 3mm foam. It can't support the weight of your system easily. I tried it once, the wings were bent just flying straight, and a simple loop caused the plane to fail.
When it comes to equipment, my servos only have 2/3's the torq that the HS55's do. But, I don't need that extra torq. But I do have good news, your receiver should be fine! On another note, you can fly your 38" indoors. If you have a tight place to fly, it won't be easy as it can't fly nearly as slow as the FF, or 28" can.... If you do get an indoor foamie, keep in mind that weight is everything. I banged one of mine up once, and I had to glue a beef up piece of foam on. Didn't add but a few grams, but I noticed the negative change in flight characteristics.... Just trying to help.... Chris |

Re: Indoor foamy help DW foamy /fancy foam
As they've said, the weight difference is all about equipment. Your listed equipment is much too big/heavy for an indoor plane. For indoor planes, you'll be looking for a 20-gram or less motor, 2S 300mah batteries, a 5-10amp ESC, and the lightest servos/RX that make sense for the airplane you choose. Weight really is everything. It won't cost you much to get a setup that will come in at 4.5 to 5.5 oz on one of the Fancy Foam airplanes.
Here's the setup I suggest: Hacker A10-9L Hacker X-5 ESC Thunder Power 2S 350's Futaba S3114 servos RJ |

Here's the setup that I'm going to use on the Fancy Foam Yak 55 that I'm building right now: motor: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s..._19g_Outrunner Servos: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...ec_Micro_Servo ESC: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...5A_2-4S_2A_BEC Battery: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...0C_Lipoly_Pack I can't recommend this setup from my own personal experience. This is the first time I'm going to use most of this stuff.... But I have used the batteries, and servos(great experience with both of 'em), and several of my friends use that motor and speed control. All in all, $10 for a motor $20 for an ESC/BEC $10 for three servos $15 for 3 batteries $55 plus shipping. Hope this helps! |

Don't know if this will help you any, but here's a comparison....
The FF Yak55 is being built. The C/F on the wings has to be trimmed, so please don't use that as a reference..... The other planes are a DW 38"Yak and DW 28" Yak jr. Hope this helps! Chris |

50%. thanks for equipment suggestions. I havn't ordered from hobby king yet. I guess cause I don't get it. Everytime I want to order something from them there, their quantity shows them in the big minus. Like the motor that you just linked. it said they have -125 of them. That means they're out right? Like the DLE111, I've been checking up on that for i can't even tell you how long and it ALWAYS says they don't have any. What gives?

Re: Indoor foamy help DW foamy /fancy foam
well when you find a product that is in stock, there is no dash and the colored "in stock' meter is colored up to the level they have. green for alot of stock and red for low stock.
Maybe you're right though and maybe I have no idea what i'm talking about. maybe not. I guess I can always try it and find out. |

The dash before a number is the minus sign. They won't have a minus sign if they're in stock
As for the plane, I'm going to suggest a DW 28" Yak. I like it the best, and it's pretty easy to setup. Also, even though it's small, it flies great, even at the beach where the wind is at! The equipment i'm going to suggest is at the higher end of the price range, but it's also higher quality equipment, and will work on a 28" DW, 32" DW pro kit, and a 34" FF Hacker A10-15S outrunner APC8x3.8SF prop or GWS8x4HD Thunderbird 9 ESC (or any 10 amp ESC will work really) Thunder Power 2s 350mah 20C lipos GWS Pico Std servos (they're pretty fast, and not very expensive ) Small rx, like a Berg 4 (or similar weight- smaller is always better!) I've used that on planes varying from 3.8-5.5oz, and it's got plenty of power for all of them. Flight times are about 5-6 minutes, or 4-5 minutes for hard 3D/freestyle |
