And if you become a professional pilot checkrides are a part of your life. I get one once a year whether I need it or not and I still make mistakes......EVERYBODY DOES and like WW Corrigan said just manage them and press on.

Man, you guys know what you're talking about. I really do have fun just about every time I fly. DPE and school schedules have pushed my check ride into what looks like next week. Going to fly tomorrow and clean up short and soft TOALs, emergencies etc. Jwilliams, I'm at CMA now but was at WHP sometimes hopping over to burbank.
Paul, I will take you up on that for sure!!! I do find when I study too hard and try to hard, I hate it. Lol. Thats not what I'm in it for at all. WW is right, it's really expensive but I hope worth it. Thanks everybody!!! You RCers got a way difference perspective than the full scale only guys. Joe |

I still remember my private ride back in '90. The last thing we did was a no flap, forward slip in to Orlando Country. Maybe the 30' wide runway messed up my perception and I ended up low and short. I had to abandon the slip, add power and drag it in. The rest of the flight back to ORL the examiner didn't say a word. He just sat with his arms crossed looking out the window. I thought for sure I had just busted my ride. I tied up the 152 and went into his office expecting to get blasted about how I was the worst applicant he had ever seen. Instead I found him finishing up my certificate (on a typewriter ). He told me about how this is where I truly learn to be a pilot, be smart, don't kill yourself and all.
To make a long story short, they don't expect or want perfection. They want you to know and fly to the standards and most importantly...be safe. When you screw something up, and you will, recognize it, fix it and move on. The ride is not over until he says it is. |

It is the instrument check ride that will always get you! At least it did for me and I will never forget the mistake I made. Heck I will probably never make that mistake again which is a good thing! Taking off out of Daytona is very busy during the day and the examiner wanted me to do a hold right off the bat at an vor just north of us. It ended up being a tear drop entry, but everything happens so fast with this hold that you better get it right the first time! Well guess what I set up everything right! but turn the wrong direction! The examiner said something and I felt like crap! He said he had to fail me which I totally understood that. He said do you want to continue and if he ever ask you that...do it!!! I did everything else spot on and I could tell he really didn't want to fail me, but he had to.
You learn from your mistakes and I know in the future if I am ever in that real situation where I had to do a hold in IMC I should be able to get it right! |

Got done with 737 school on 12-18-2011. Was pretty intense, and a lot of fun at the same time. Did it all in the -300, better autopilot and auto throttles. Met a lot of cool guys and made new friends. I was operating WELL outside my comfort zone for about the whole time I was there. In the end, I probably had over-studied. As it turns out, my 15 years at the "regionals" had provided me with something that cannot be bought. Experience.
I have not flown much since 2002 but I found that I still "have" it. I guess you never really loose your skills, they just get rusty. Checkrideitis--yea I had it for the entire time, but as the check ride progressed, it lessened a bit. After the visual approach/ single engine landing went well, the sim came off motion and I heard the stairs being lowered. The check airman came up and patted me on the shoulder and said " you passed". That was better than a touchdown at the Super Bowl for me. HPA is a great place. Mongrel |

Once a year? Nice I wish, twice a year in each airplane that I fly, so 4 a year, theres always a checkride looming. |

Not much full size flying anymore for me but had 2050 hours in a OH-58 Helicopter another 2400 in a Piper Arrow I owned with a friend. Instrument on my fixed wing. I did get to fly a Lockheed F-35 simulator about 2-months ago. Way cool!

Hardest Check ride was an Initial CFI/MEI with the FAA in Las Vegas. I passed after a 3 hour flight on a 100+ degree day in a seminole. I failed my CFI single add on 3 days later because the DPE said "your lazy 8's weren't Lazy enough for me." the ATP was a breeze.. and i have been given a hold 1 time going into to KSMO in a Citation on V186 in the passed 5 years. It wasn't even really a hold.. it was "make left 360's along V186" i guess it just depends on where you fly and how often..
