The MOP is just a tiny piece of this all, and is obviously what the MAAA thinks it needs to do to demonstrate that it taking reasonable steps to create a safe flying environment. It's not the answer to the much bigger qn...

If there were no rules whatsoever, I bet the premiums would be higher! Like insuring a house with no doors or windows

Anyway, I'm going to stay out of this one from here!

Umm... actually what causes premiums to rise are claims under the policy... No insurance company has carried out a review of the MOPs and made an actuarial assessment of their impact on accidents and claims. At best, they may have looked at the history of claims caused by model airplanes (mostlikely internationally) and set a premium accordingly. As time has gone on and there have been no catastrophic claims in Australia, the premiums have fallen.

Yes, we need rules to give people guidelines regarding an expected standard of conduct but they shouldn't give an insurance company a reason to avoid cover.

I say again, if this is such a risky activity, why do most house and contents policies cover it (and any related legal liability) as part of the standard cover.

I'm not a personal injury lawyer (I have some self-respect!) but I can guarantee you are going to get sued regardless of what the MOP does or doesn't say. Liability will be determined based on legal principles not what the MOP says. To get a little legalistic, public liability (as with all forms of negligence (with the exception of certain strict liability circumstances)) is based on duty of care and breach of that duty. I struggle to see how this document creates a duty of care in favour of a third party which does not otherwise already exist at general law.

So in other words.... The sky isn't falling? The drama llama can go back in the barn?

Well done on the unknown there Lee, that is usually the round that sorts the men from the boys as you would have seen in Bendigo You do need a good caller though.

The rules are there to be followed and I am pretty sure the master that came up to teach you the finer points of Imac explained the beer rules. Drink plenty, haha

Great day in Sydney for a fly also.

Get yourself a Heli and fly it in you back yard like I did this morning. As Richo would say "happy days"

Wings ha! don't need no stinking wings
Jake and I have contemplated flying some of the foamies in the back yard, but my back door neighbours are a pain in the backside! Can only imagine what would happen it it ended up over there. Lost count of how many tennis, cricket and Soccer balls have found their demise over there.
