YS or Saito

I have two planes and want to use one engine for the both, not sure if its going to happen as I would like them both to have plenty of power. What has more power, I know all the details about the nitro and supposed reliability of the YS and Saito. The two planes are a GP Extra 300 (6pds) and a Matt Chapman Cap 580 (7 pds).

YS 63 or Saito 82 or just put a saito 91 in them both and call it a day. I see YS makes a 91 but it seems pretty heavy.

I saw from a chart the YS 63 had the same HP as a Saito 91 is that true? I wish YS would make a new light weight 91, the choice would be easy.

Thanks

YS puts out more power for sure, but it being heavier you get a higher wing loading. I had a YS-140L which is still one of my favorite engines of all time. Ran like a clock and alot of power. I have Had the Saito 30-72-91 and 180. All were awsome and very reliable. I would go with the Saito, best bang for your buck IMO.

I had a string of Saitos and YS's in my glow days. the Saitos seemed easier to tune, but you can't beat a good dialed in YS. Very powerful. I had a couple of 120's and a 140. The 140 was "new in the box"... but the box had been sitting on someone's garage shelf for about 15 years. I got it for almost nothing, and expected to have to replace every seal in it... It was a little hard to get started the first time, but once I did, it ran like a top, never missed a lick.

It is hard to beat the power of a good running YS, however, they can be a PITA. I would stick with a Saito.

Check the new prices for Saito on Horizon first. The YS is a stronger engine cc for cc.

There are a lot of opinions out there. Here are my results. Not much real power difference. The power bands are different. The YS likes a smaller prop at higher revs and the Saito likes big wood. Tests on 25% Coopers. Many props tried, these are the props that came in with the best power. Case 1 Saito 82, case 2 FZYS63S.

I'd say that if you are flying pattern, go with YS. If you are into 3D/sport then go Saito.

If it were me and 3D, I'd put a Saito 100 on that 7lb bird. 6lbs is about the limit on effective hover pullout for either the 63 or 82.
