PBG Extra 260 Build

Well i have decided to build another 260!

I just finished my first scratch built one and it is going great so i thought i had better make a spare.

The fuse will be fully e glass/carbon composite but instead of doing composite wings again i am going to look at doing foam cored wings.

Photo is of my current one and my old one is in the backround

Good on you Steve. I suppose I had better volunteer to do the cores, as I think I have the blanks sitting around here somewhere. I have nearly got my foam cutter up and running again just need a more powerful transformer for the wire heat as these big wings need a lot of power. I am keen to cut some more cores for my next Slick (even though I haven't finished the current one). Also I have upgraded the foam cutter software to GMFC Pro. Will be using 1 1/2" carbon tube on my next one as it is much easier to build.

The vinyl graphics definitely do the job. Sorry they took so long, I wish there were more hours in the day.

Sounds great! Thank you very much. I will need a lot of your advise on the cosre as i have only made stabs so wings will be new to me! Do you have the sofware to do wings and stabs or do i need to get the info off of frazer or mike?

I have started the cowl and am picking up the fuse mould next weekend. Have to borrow a vac pump to do as mine was stolen.

Im also keen on the 1 1/2" tube idea

Will your slick wings be the same?

You did an awesome do on the vinyl, I did some of them with a guy up here and helped do them, I see why it takes so long!

I have all the info on the 260 wings. However you might want to see if Frazer thinks there might be improvements made by thinning the wings. This is possible due to your light weight building and the thinner tube.

Got the cowl moulded tonight.

Layup was 1 80g layer then 1 200g. It should be strong once it is bolted together and also bolted on the plane. The last one i made was 100g and 300g so will be good to see if i can save weight here. Also i put some carbon 200g patches around the bolt holes to stop the hole opening up.

Will be making a second cowl for Mike aswell as he is about the build one also.

Thanks Jack.

Rod,

I sent Frazer an email about the wings and this is what he said

Last set of foam wings we made for a 260 was the ones on the Memphis belle. They came out too heavy because we glassed / painted them. So go for film, right over the balsa. I think the shape was ok, we thinned the section down lots compared to the old moulded wings. Maybe you should try a newer section, Rod will have the sections.

Got the cowl out of the mould today. The cowl undercoated weighs 460g
I cant find the book for my other extra but i think it weighed 430g so a little bit lighter but there are a few bits i made stronger on the new cowl.

It currently has no motor in it. That pic is a few months old. I actually just made a new canopy for it and had to sand off Frazer's historic paint scheme, she was peeling and beat up. She's all in primer right now minus the wings and stabs. Then I just need to build or buy a new cowl. Used to have a DA-150, this is the airframe from 2000-2005 flown in competition here in the USA. I'm gonna use a new DA-200, but haven't mounted it yet.

New scheme will be themed off Racer-X's yellow/black car from the Speed Racer cartoon. Prob done early 2012.

Will need to talk to mike but im sure we could sort something out for a cowl if you get stuck. Where did you get the canopy from?

PBG sent it to me a while back because I knew when I got the plane I would need it. Was tinted dark and warped in the Florida sun. I'll take some pics of the sanded down fuse today and a pic of just how bad the cowling is. I agree, a brand new cowl is def the way to go. The new canopy came out perfect, a 10/10.
