KILL SWITCHES
Do you guys use optical kill switches and if so what brand and where did you buy it?
I was going to buy a Jomar unit but I couldn't tell if it was an optical switch. Then I looked at the Smart-Fly optical system but it sounded like part of it had to be connected to your transmitter -- I'm way confused! Thanks! |

Re: KILL SWITCHES
I use the FO Kill from ElectroDynamics.
I plug the sender into Aux 4 and wire the other side into my ignition. Works perfect and IMO is a must have. http://www.electrodynam.com/cgi-loca...html?E+scstore |

Re: KILL SWITCHES
I use a relay switch Model: MWRS-5P2 that plugs in to the aux port on the RX , and then into the ignition and ingnition battery.
When you buy it has a wiring diagram that gives you instructions on setting this kill switch up with DA engines. Works a treat and just assign a switch on or Transmitter. http://www.uwhizz.com/page5.html |

Re: KILL SWITCHES
Electrodynamics FO kill switch on all my giant scale planes on Aux. 4 JR dial so you can't bump and kill the Ignition by accident. Smart Fly probable does the same. The main thing is you need a way to kill the engine in any emergency.

Re: KILL SWITCHES
Dual rx's, choke servos, kill switches with a servo attached - they all add more weight than the 1 ounce Smart-fly cutoff. I choose smart-fly for the weight and for the fact that it 100% isolates the receiver from any sort of ignition feedback. To run a choke servo you are usually close to the engine to do it, and if you aren't then you're adding even more weight in a linkage set-up. Same goes for a switch linked to a servo. Plus, the smart-fly is also 100% solid-state (no moving parts), unlike the old-school alternatives.
I'm not bashing anyone who doesn't use one and I have seen 100's of successful "old-school" setups. I am just pointing out some advantages of the Smart-fly that lean me more in favor of it. |

Re: KILL SWITCHES
I use a simple pull type on off switch from radio shack that cost about 90 cents, and then use a micro servo to pull it. Easies set-up I have ever used and has not failed me once yet. I had to use it once to save my plane because I started getting serious interferience on my plane and turned out the the ground wire had come off of my plug cap and was sending all kinds of rf back to my receiver, killed the motor and all was fine.
