Re: PAU 30% Sukhoi Su-26m Build and Fly

After ordering my Svetlana pilot and dreaming about how good she was gonna look sittin' in her ride, I realized that the cockpit would be remiss without a proper panel. So.....I spent the last three hours (yes, I am SLOW!) mocking up a nice panel in cardboard. I think I have it just about right now, but realize that it is gonna be a little harder to duplicate in balsa. Anybody have any ideas on an easy way to transfer my cardboard templates (6 of them) to balsa and get this thing glued together so it is straight?

I was thinking it would be pretty simple to get the dimensions to someone that has a (3 axis?) cnc router and have them cut it out of foam, then I could sheet it with 1/16" balsa and cut out any unnecessary foam.

Any other ideas?

I think this panel is gonna look schweet (if I do say so myself) and I will be happy to make the dimensions available to anyone that wants them as soon as I get mine finished.

Thanks for any help you all may be able to provide!

Regards,

John,

I can't believe I even started on the one!!

I was thinking Maybe Charlie could help cut one out of foam or something. There are only six pieces, so maybe the laser thing would be the way to go. I'll have to show you the mock-up and see what you think.

I am thinking that I will just design the actual panel online (I think I remember a website where you can layout a panel and print it on photo paper or something?), print it and glue it on. Should look pretty decent.

The kids have a bowling tournament in Everett all day tomorrow, so I probably won't get much more done, unless we get home at a decent hour.

Here is a link to a downloadable version on FG:

If there is enough interest I'll compress a higher resolution version and upload that.

Thanks, Al. John gets a lot of credit for some of those flying shots too. I'm just happy that the video turned out well! Now I can get some sleep.

Yeah, these planes ROCK!

My assembly is going waaay slower than the other guys as I have been waiting on the goods, and My kids keep me busy on the weekends. I am not much of a cold-weather flyer so it is all good!

Get on it, Sam!! sounds like you were absolutely fiending to get at yours! I hate it when work gets in the way of playtime!!!

Still looking for ideas/techniques for my instr. panel. Never really done one before. More looking for construction methods rather than actual panels, as I think I'll just print a panel on the computer and glue it on.

Looking forward to your progress Sam!

I wasn't happy with the resolution of the last video, so for broadband users I compressed a much higher quality version of the Sukhoi flying vid.

Jeff, is your glare panel curved or angled? If it's curved I would transfer your cardboard outlines to 1/16" balsa and use ammonia and water to help curve the wood. Once dry, it holds in place pretty well.

Ryan,

No, it is all straight to keep it simple. I looked at a few pics of the full-scale and it looks to be straight and angular as well. Shouldn't be too hard to replicate fairly accurately and easy, I'm just getting lazy as all my ARF's recently have been sooo simple to assemble that I am losing some of my motivation to build ANYTHING!!!

Here are a couple of pics I have been using as a reference.

Regards,

Astro
