It's not that your getting mellow. Your learning. Kind of a cool concept isn't it?

Kris is very correct. If everybody would put their ego's aside, sit back, relax and read his post they would learn a little something, and then we could put this engine bickering to bed once and for all.

Why bother bragging about my contributions, Ralph? The mods work, nuff said.

Actually, this is the 27th time we have agreed . .25 times you agreed with ME. . twice I agreed with YOU.

Re: 112 Octane LEADED Gas

While you guys were discussing the "finer" points of lead VS. no lead...
I killed off a dozen ant mounds, killed a bunch of weeds in the garden, washed some nasty parts down, and painted the barn. LOL

It wasn't my intention to stir the pot with this thread... I just had a weak moment when I passed by my local speed shop and thought I'd pick up some 112 Sunoco for kicks.

In all reality the leaded 112 octane gas was a fine waste of money, but at least the gas doesn't stink up my vehicle like the pump stuff.

It also runs great in a 13-1 compression big block-
y know - the ol grocery getter --
I stuck some really small chamber heads on a decked 350 -and ended up wishing they sold that stuff at the pump.

And in a R-3350. There's one with a Sea Fury bolted to it based about 15 min away.

Re: 112 Octane LEADED Gas

OK... I am gonna stir this up now... what about running NitroMethane?
I remember in the early days... the urban folklore was that it burned cooler in the glow engines then alcohol as long as one didn't get too lean... (Huh.. dat sounds crazy!)... OK.. Nitromethane with 20:1 Pennzoil 2-stroke oil.. did anyone ever try it?? Would one need to retard timing? Reduce compression ratio???
And speaking of canisters.. I had the (silly maybe?) impression that "Tuned Exhaust" overscavenged and then "Super Charged" a two stroke... um... isn't that a RPM sensitive phenomona?.. or does a cannister only overscavenge at all RPM's?.. and no supercharge effect???

Nitro is about $40 a gallon, you wouldn't want to even if you could...We run about 22% in the GT80 racers with about 8% oil and the rest methanol...It doesn't work with gas....Way back when 1/4 scale started there were some people trying nitroEthane, don't know if it worked or even if it's still available...

Nitro has a very low Octane rating, around 60 or so. The reason it works well with alcohol based glo-fuel is that it prolongs the burn cycle a bit, adds a bit of oxygen percentage to the burn as it chemically breaks down during combustion, and burns hotter than alcohol. BUT, remember, it is being used in conjunction with 140+ octane Methanol, so at 35% Nitro, 55% methanol, you get about 105-110 average octane rating for the fuel. This works pretty well with a high-rpm/small displacement gloe engine with a small combustion chamber area, but in our low-rpm big gassers it's problematic at best.

Now add it to 100 octane gas, and watch your octane rating plummet, your detonation skyrocket, and your engine melt down or rattle itself to death with prolonged use. At 50-50 with 100 octane your rating would be about 80 octane, 25-75 would be about 88-90, and 10-90 would be about 95-97 octane.

I've seen guys try this trick with 10% nitro to 89 octane pump gas, and scratch their heads wondering why their little 2-stroke detonated and overheated so badly, and eventually just quit running altogether.

Not advised, IMHO.
