Looks nice! Was hoping to see it at Toledo, but Carden is not listed as an exhibitor this year!

Re: Carden Ultimate

Guys: I will help to answers the questions about the new Carden Ultimate 20-300 that I've read so far. The design and consulting team has been hard at work over the winter to get this plane where it is now.

Toledo: The plane will not be covered and painted by the time Toledo starts.

Wings: Yes, they are foam sheeted with 1/16 balsa (normal Carden construction). The wing panels also have upper and lower wood spars due to the thinner airfoil.

Re: Carden Ultimate

Are the wings one-piece? Looking at the photos on the Carden site, it looks like they are. The plane looks great!

Re: Carden Ultimate

Jack: Yes, the wings are one piece. Several versions of "wing tube" wings were tested. One piece wings on this type of plane (thin airfoil planes) were found to be lighter and stronger, also assembles faster at the field. Transportation to the field should be fine since the wings are shorter than the fuse.

Re: Carden Ultimate

Dan, thanks for the info! One piece wings are no problem, my 3W ultimate has them. Do the wings use flying wires? Finishing up a 40% Carden Cap (for me) and a 40% 260 (for a friend), the Ultimate will be my next Carden.

Re: Carden Ultimate

Who's building the prototype and who will be fling it? 98" one piece swept wings sound like a transportation nightmare...will two piece wings be an option?

Re: Carden Ultimate

Jack: The plane does not have flying wires. Flying wires on the wings are approx. the same drag as an additional wing. The wings are designed to hold up to Unlimited IMAC and freestyle type of flying without the wires. Glad to see you are building a Carden Cap, I flew three of those a few years ago on the contest circuit. Let me know if you need help setting them up to fly nice, I used some exotic mixes to get mine to fly wonderful.

CBKO7: A Carden builder that the owners of Carden Aircraft picked out specifically for this project is building the prototype. To keep his phone and front door from ringing off the hook, we have been instructed to keep it under wraps. We have commissioned two (2) TOC and Don Lowe Master's pilots with lot's of biplane experience (both design and flying) to test fly and recommend changes. Let me say that we are taking our time on this one. We've already started over on the wing design completely once, and started over on the actual fuse construction once also to get this offering to where you see it now on the Carden Site. In short, we are very picky about this one.

As of today the one piece wings are what's on the prototype. We tested several versions of plug in wings. The one piece were stronger, lighter, faster to assemble at the field. We found that the airfoil had to be thicker (something we did not want) to support plug in wings. I don't want to take this thread into design, load, and stresses. However, we found that the tube was too close to the sheeting (thin airfoils) for the foam to spread the load to our satisfaction. The sandwich effect of balsa - foam - balsa needs thickness in foam for rigidity. The current wings have this, but the wing tube was eating up too much foam right at the center of lift. Wing tube was almost as thick as the wing itself, not good. So we are going with the one piece wing with spars as of now. The wings are shorter than the fuse, so if one can transport the fuse, we are hoping the wings will not be a problem in length. It goes together almost twice as fast with less parts to unload, not having to take the hatch off to assemble, less screws to tighten.
I hope this helps,

Dan Baker

Re: Carden Ultimate

That prototype looks very, very nice. With a wood spar the weight of the wings will probably be less too. Man that is clean work! I love that air exit behind the lower wing looks neat. The top wing attachement looks fast and clean too. One servo per aileron also ... NICE!

I have a 112" bipe with 2-part wings. At that size they have to be... but it is a LONG assembly process with flying wires also. This one does look like it will go together quickly at the field.

Hmmmm ... maybe this will be my first Carden next winter.
