EXTRA 300S (lower wing) V.S. EXTRA 260/300 (mid wing)

which one do you think looks and fly's better???

a lower wing 300s (like comp-arf, carden 330, AM 42% 330) or a mid wing 260/300 (new wild hare 300, dalton 260, carden 260)

thanks

Re: EXTRA 300S (lower wing) V.S. EXTRA 260/300 (mid wing)

Extra 300S is mid wing. 300L is low wing. Both 330's (S and L) are low wing. 260's are mid wing.

As of now... I prefer the 260 design overall. There is a new 300 coming out pretty soon that I bet is going to rock! Can't say a lot more though..

the 300 is mid-wing same as the 260 and THE 300S HAS A LOWER WING, THE 300L HAS AN EVEN LOWER WING.

Re: EXTRA 300S (lower wing) V.S. EXTRA 260/300 (mid wing)

here are the types of extra's :
1. EXTRA 300 (MID WING SINGLE SEATER)
2. EXTRA 260 (SAME AS THE 300 EXEPT WITH A 260HP ENGINE)
3 EXTRA 300S (SLIGHTLY LOWER THAT THE 300 AND 260)
4. EXTRA 300L (EVEN LOWER WING THAN 300S AND IS A 2 SEATER)

THERE IS NO SUCH PLANE AS AN EXTRA 330. JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE PUT A 330HP ENGINE ON THE 300 DOES NOT MEAN IT'S A 330 THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

You forgot about the edge 540 and it's overhead wing design originally inspired by the beloved Cub.

I know lots too............

Re: EXTRA 300S (lower wing) V.S. EXTRA 260/300 (mid wing)

Hello,

In model design most all manufacturers do not go the the scale location for the wing and stabs. Some are more severe than others with location but the buying public wants less to mess with especially in IMAC driven designs. We have learned alot in 15 years doing this and our designs have won major events and championships over the last few years.

I would think along the lines of what you like, your budget in money and time and see what fits. I talk to people email and on the phone about this and I always tell them buy what you want not and don't settle.

Later

John

Re: EXTRA 300S (lower wing) V.S. EXTRA 260/300 (mid wing)

i was correct

THE EXTRA 300 IS A MID WING 2/SINGLE SEATER
THE EXTRA 300S IS A LOWER WING SINGLE SEATER
THE EXTRA 260 IS THE SAME AS THE 300 EXEPT WITH A 260 HP ENGINE
THE EXTRA 300L IS A LOWER WING 2 SEATER.
WHEN I SAY "LOWER WING" I DO NOT MEAN "LOW WING LIKE THE CAP" I MEAN LOWER THAN THE 300/260.

SO THERE *SNAP*

VIC. . .Listen VERY carefully!!!

The entire 260/300 incarnation started with the 230, then 260, and then Walter Extra built the 2-Seat Extra 300 MID Wing, which was substantially larger and heavier than the 260.

BTW. . the 260 was caled a 260 because of its hP rating of the engine. . not for any other reason. 2-3 "260's" were built, then 3-4 "320" versions were built, that had upgraded engines of 320 rated hP. 1 REAL 260, and 3 320's (registered as 260's) are still flying. The 260 was NEVER FAA certified, and is rated as an "Experimental" aircraft.

The "300" Mid-wing is an outgrowth of the 260, using the same basic layout, but is over 3 feet longer overall, has a 2-seat cockpit, 2 foot onger wing, and the same basic tail feathers as the 260.

The "300L" is a LOW Wing Extra 300 (hence the L designation), with a 3-4" shorter wing, and otherwise of the same dimensions and appointments as the 300 Mid-wing. The 300L could be had with either the longer 2-plce canopy, OR the single-seat canopy. If it had the single seat canopy, it was called a "300R".

The "300S " is a SINGLE Seat version of the 300L, hence the S designation. The front cockpit is removed, the canopy shortened, wing shortened a little over a foot, and the same basic 260/300 tail used.

The 300 "X" versions of both the 300L and 300S have a 10% LONGER rudder, 10% longer elevator, and aerobalancers on the elevators outboard of the last elevator rib. Any new 300 series aircraft can be ordered with the new tail design. This makes the 300s and 300l into either a 300sx or 300lx. In the case of Patty Wagstaff's "300Xs", she opted for the larger rudder but NOT the enlarged elevator design, making her's a one-off of the "X" designation Extras.

So, there you have it. .

Extra 230
Extra 260
Extra 300 Mid Wing
Extra 300L LOW Wing
Extra 300S Single Seat low wing
Extra 300X (enlarged tail pieces)
Extra 300R (Extra 300L with single seat canopy)
ANY Extra "330" is the same as above, with a 330 hP engine from the factory.

NOW. . . As for how they fly, and which is preferable????

I'll let everyone else discuss that subject. I've flown midwings. . they roll more axially, but pitch is affected by the stabilizer and elevator getting shadowed by the wing sometimes. Low wings are more pitch sensitive, but roll less axially, and tend to require more rudder-elevator mixing.

Depending on your Dihedral, your plane may, or may not, require rudder-aileron mixing. I've seen it required, and NOT required, in several versions of both the 260, 300, 300s and 300l.

Carry On.

Re: EXTRA 300S (lower wing) V.S. EXTRA 260/300 (mid wing)

i remember reading an article on the full size extra's and their mainplane positions.
most pilots prefered the midwing postion for the way the aircraft handled ie no rudder coupling, but when flying in competitions the ground visiblity for the box landmarks was a lot better with the lower wing. i think it was in aeroplane monthly.

personally i prefer the look of a midwing plane and especially the way they handle. i have a real problem dialing in a low wing plane. edge 540's and extra 260's are my favourites.

Vic
I didn't forget anything Vic. I omitted it because there are NO model versions of it at the moment.

When someone starts making models of the new LP. . I'll include it in that list. It is structurally and dimensionally the same as the 300L/R, but has been optimized with CF panels and more aerodynamic cowl and tail to reduce drag. Otherwise its only a glorified 300L.

Here's the new 300 SHP, flown by Mike Goulian. . .Note the . . .raised????. . . wing. . http://www.extraaircraft.com/images/EA-300SHP(1).jpg

Very pretty color scheme too. . .
