tail wheel spring trouble

My 3d 100cc size gas plane has springs in the tail landing gear and it puts lots of stress on the pull pull rudder servo .

Any ideas on an alternative to springs or your favorite tail landing gear.

thanks

RedwingRC has a Smartdesign "Trouble Free" tailwheel that is listed as an alternate tailwheel option. I don't have first hand information on it as I use the simple series because they offer better ground control but they don't offer the simple series for anything above 50cc.

Glow fuel tubing with small zip ties to attach them. Go to teamflyingcircus.com and search tailwheel issues. Red7fifty helped me with mine and it has turned out to be the best set up far and away !!!!!!!!

I use only tiller tail wheels now. The springs style have a lot of issues I don't care for. The tiller style is much simpler and works great.

Compression springs are the set up. May be a bit excessive for a 30cc set up.....

Use a tiller arm. Easy to set up. Just glue a ball link into the rudder, and run a piano wire from the tail wheel to the ball link.

I've had a lot of issues in the past with tailwheel steering springs with one exception and that is the plane I just finished building. The problem I noticed was that all of the tailwheel steering arms were very narrow (maybe 1") while the spring mount on the rudder is much wider (1.5 - 2.0). This causes problems at extreme deflections because the rudder is stretching out the spring the more it travels. It takes torque from the servo to overcome and is hard on all the parts. This is required on smaller deflection models as they need the extra ratio to give adequate ground handling but we have much more throw on 3D models so try to make the steering wheel arm equal in width to the rudder horn. The one in the pic is the 100 cc model from Mile High RC. I made a little plate out of Carbon Fiber sheet and attached it to OE arm. then find fairly stiff springs and only tension them enough to hold neutral. When you go through full travel the tension will never change on the springs. This is why you need stiff springs as they will not be pre loaded. I hope that all made sense.
