Ignition Mounting - Dos & Donts

Hi. New to Gassers and am mounting a DLE-20 on a Lazy Ace Biplane.

I am trying to determine the best place for Ignition mount and understand the Dos and Dont's when dealing with ignitions.

I have three options as I see it.

1. In Cowl, above motor on platform
2. In Cowl, behind exhaust on firewall
3. In Fuselage behind firewall

I would prefer to keep it far away from my radio gear. Thus thinking above engine would be best but not sure if the vibration would be troublesome compared to mounting to firewall. However, firewall there could be a heat issue.

I don't have enough room on the sides due to cowl clearance.

Above the engine as shown would certainly work and would probably be my choice in a tight cowl such as yours. Behind engine exhaust would be out for sure. How about inside the fuselage just behind the cowl? I have used that location several times on planes with no motor box and no room in the cowl. On a gasser you don't need to have the tank crammed up in the nose so it can be moved back leaving room for the ignition module between the tank and firewall. About the only drawback is the large hole required to pass the plug cap.

I can do above the engine and behind the firewall but again my concern is about the large firewall hole for the plug and it being in the fuse cavity where my RX is, etc.

Time to get creative with some 1/4in ply(sides) and some 1/8in ply(shelf) and build yourself a shelf over the engine in the same location as you have the ignition box now.

Options 1 or 3 fine. #2 would leave me a little hesitant....

You might find the fit above the engine a little easier if you yaw that ignition 90º so that the box is longitudinal instead of lateral.

Here's a rough drawing for your ignition box shelf over the engine or you could make it to mount on the side. Then use velcro for mounting.

Looks like some good info so far. If you decide to go inside the fuselage, the hole really isn't that big. I usually just put a bit of foam rubber around the plug lead where it exits the fuselage.

+1 on the Velcro. I use double sticky Velcro on the box to constrain the X-Y motion and a Velcro strap over the top for the Z axis. Velcro is a great vibration damper.

Do you think a plywood firewall is going to stop RFI?

Put it where it fits
