Tail wheel steering

I’ve never been one to hook-up my tail wheel for first flights, and some my say ever, but lets see how you set-up your tail wheel steering. Post pics of your working set-up.

Jason, Here is my setup. Works very well and is positive. Also, You never stretch the springs. Mark Hale designed this setup. Springs are always under some compression.

The tiller arm at the bottom of the rudder is a flat peice of CF plate about .062 thick. As you can see I put a couple of ball links on the tiller facing down. this is done to bring the linkage as close to horizontal as can be. The actual linkage is automotive grade O rings and nylon ties. The ends of the ties are put through the ball link and steering arm of the tailwheel. the heads of a couple more tie are clipped off abd the zipped into the linkage tie.

Re: Tail wheel steering

I used to hook my tailwheels up, but after a couple years of rigging them up, and THEN giving it some thought, I do not see the need to and no longer do it. At least on aerobatic planes. The rudder steers an aerobatic plane just fine on grass or pavement. Planes with small rudders do need to have the tailwheel hooked up or a large runway to turn around on.

That is the sweetest install / design I have ever seen Dude!

I don't think I will post mine as RC4 - I think you have shown us how to do it right!

Thanks for the Mark Hale link!

Re: Tail wheel steering

The compression spring shown in the post above is definitley the way to go. Yes, it is true that the larger aircraft will steer just fine with the rudder. I will continue to hook up my tailwheel for the days that I fly with a cross wind. I want to be in control of my aircraft at all times, in the air, and on the ground.

Me too, nothing more embarrasing than having to get your plane because it keeps ground looping on the far side of the runway in a crosswind.LOL!
