This market is going to be a no holds barred affair.

Re: ZDZ 50 or DA 50?

Dick,

I have t agree with you as to whats in store. Basically the old and some current style engines should be referred to as tractor engines. They work fine, they start great and they are very very reliable in most cases.

But the technology is old hat 1960's BSA Bantam stuff. But that is what the market wanted and remember up until 1990 or so who even thought of having a 42% RC airplane in the workshop. That was for the elite few if anyone at all.

Well its all changing. Today there is huge market for RC gas engines from 30cc to 300cc. They will have their fair share of teething problems when they hit the market but they will leave the current crop in the dust.

And the new breed of engines will come from everyone currently in the game. It will be all part of staying in the business.

I cannot wait to see some of them hit the shelves.

FWIW-- I see the real front runners as those utilizing really cutting edge electronics (not simply a spark maker) and cylinder designs made using very advanced casting techniques to optomize flow patterns . For years there has been quite a concession in port design -simply because the casting techniques were difficult or very expensive.
the rest of the engine- pretty much same old technology.

Re: ZDZ 50 or DA 50?

Why not check out hte "real world rpm" thread and see if there are any rpm's listed for these engines there??

From what I have experienced, almost every 50cc engine will be in the same 100-200 rpm range for top end power. If it's turning about 7200 or better with a 22-8 Menz or Menz copy, then that is about the norm for the 50cc class.

Jon, i have both.... The two engines both have loads of power, the only difference i have found the ZDZ to be slightly more reliable. (As in it did not need returning for updates)
But to be fair these were carried out, foc. Also these issues have been resolved by DA. so you pays your money and takes your choice...

when we get metred FI for our planes - and its all out there - getting cheaper and cheaper - soon lap top engine adjustment - light and reliable - as for the current engines watch out the europeans are at war and they want to give us the best technologies

While they are at war I am out flying.

I don't need a laptop to adjust two needles on my DA 50 and it runs great.

Seriously that's great that they are stepping up technology but I was hoping to leave my laptop at work. I use it all day long there. I would rather just have much lighter engines. BME seems to be leading the way there.

So.. when is someone going to turbocharge one of these things???

All bets are off for power if you do that.

Piped - my ZDZ50 (That is pronounded fifty)turns easily in the low mid 8000 rpm range in the air on the Mejzlic 22x8
high mid 7000s on the ground - and --no problems - no looseness etc..
that is effectively turbo charging -an actual turbo on two stroke is a bit difficult to do -

Uh,. no it's not it's called improving the exhaust scavenging, the exact opposite of supercharging.. and its not that difficult. The problem is finding a turbo small enough. there have already been experimental 25-60cc 2-stokes with turbos on them. they just weren't practical.
