RCats makes a nice kill switch that is a little cheaper: http://rcatsystems.com/electronics/rc100.php

If you want to tinker with electronics, then these circuits are a good start but I would only recommend them for use in switching scale lighting systems on a glow plane etc. They lack the isolation and fault tolerance characteristics that are important for safety critical and/or high noise systems such as ignitions and smoke pumps.

You need to optically isolate the signal from the ign. module. this is easy to do with a opto-isolator chip. run from that into a 2n222 transistor and a diode and it should work.

As Wildhare said it won't work for reasons he correctly stated: The signal from the receiver is a pulse signal, not 0 or 6V dc. It's hard to top the Smart Fly. It's all done and de-bugged for a small amount of cash. If you could re-do your circuit to decode the pulses then you could make your own. It's a much more complicated circuit though. More money for components too.

Check out post number 2 by CB Dane in this link: http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=115794
I built this some years ago for a on board glow driver but easily adapted to ignition switch by adjusting the pot so that the diver is on when your receiver switch is on and off when the switch is off.

Re: homemade ignition cutoff

when i used to race model powerboats that were gas spark ingition, we made our own ignition cut off devices that consisted of a good size micro switch that was connected to one of the ignition leads , so when you hit the spare servo switch contact was lost in the wire. very very simple / cheap and very effective about $2. you can mount this on a flat board combined with a good little servo so its all in one.
