Hi everyone.. I am building a Bill Hemple 38% Super Decathlon at the moment and I have a quick quesion about hinging..
The Elevators and Rudder are hinged with Dubro or Robart Style big pin hinges.. in the past I have glued these into 50cc models with 30min. epoxy (ZPoxy i think..) without any problems.. but this it the first set of near 40% control surfaces I have done this way...
What have you all been using to glue these hinges into 30 & 40% aerobat models??

you can use expoxy, but ive been using polyurethane glue with great results. it puffs up a little and will really hold the hinges tight. get a cotton bud and dip it in a glass of water then in the hinge hole. then dip the hinge into the glue just about half way, and put a little drop in the hole. put hinge in and turn it a couple of times to work the glue in. as it dries it will expand out of the holes. just leave it untill fully cured as it will break off easy. if you try to clean it, it gets sticky and messy!

Oh yeah, put the tiniest drop of oil on the hinge pin before starting!

Yep that's the right one! There are others brands, but there all more or less the same! I tried em all!

Keep in mind this glue only works with moisture! Get a little wet in there!

Thats interesting.. I've always come back and wiped it away. But it makes sense that you could just break off the extra after it's cured.

It's pretty good stuff, has a shelf life but it's pretty cheap so that's not a big issue.

It does has a poor shelf life once opened, so buy smaller bottles!

You can wipe it away, you just need to keep doing it as it keeps expanding! prepsol (wax & grease remover) works best without any damage to covering or paint.

You guys should play around with this stuff! as it's so cheap, you will find other good use's for it as well.

I used it to sheet the wings on the big 55%er, and even after falling out of the sky straight into the ground, the wings received VERY little damage! they are hard as a rock!

Yeah I've used it for a few things. It's particularly good when laminating and I built a polystyrene plane almost exclusively with this glue.

I didn't know you used this for the extra. Whats the verdict with that plane? Will you rebuild it? How were the stabs etc?

I only used poly on the wings as they are so big and needed the extra strength.
I will not rebuild the 55%er, in fact I sold the engine and a few other things!
However I loved building and am soon to start the next one!

It's another hyperlite, this time it's a slick 540 40% that is designed to run on the 100cc size engines.
Wing span 119", I'm shooting for 26 pounds (11.5 kg)

So why not another 55%er? Honestly, it's a bit of a pain in the arse! It's a little big to handle around and takes up so much space! The amount of glue and covering etc is very high! Remember the wing span is 146"!!! I used 14 jr servos and arms etc! Heck the arms alone became expensive when there are 14 of them!

The slick on the other hand will use the equipment of a standard 100cc plane.

I really enjoy building as much as flying! Hopefully this one will hang around a litle longer so people can see the result (or lack of!) a kit built!

It was a great feeling taking off that first te with something that you built! We have so many talented people in oz, bit not so many are building aerobatic kits! I reckon a lot of you guys would love it!
I know a few have built in the past, but it never really took off in oz!
