I finally gave up on my new DA 50 after a year. Too many dead sticks while doing inverted 3D stuff. I tried everything to fix it. Many others have had the problem too (or still do). I could have stuck it out a little more and tried to resolve the problem. But I decided that I may not be able to save it the next time (5 dead sticks.....some were really close disasters, too low). So I bought three ZDZ 50 NG's for a good deal from RC Showcase. One went to a buddy at my field. Another to replace the DA 50 which I sold after sending to DA for a checkup (found nothing wrong of course). The third is going in my new Ultra RC 87 Yak. A buddy of mine has a ZDZ 50 NG at the field. The thing has sick transition and power. I really liked it so I'm going to try them. He never ever had the problem I had with dead sticks. I'll report back this spring with peformance reports. Again the DA was great in normal flight attitudes (if there is such a thing with my flying). But get it inverted near idle and she dies (inverted harriers, inverted flat spins, and outside loops). Remember this is my personal experience, no slam against DA, but I had a rough time with mine. Maybe it was just a bad one. But that's all it takes to turn you off.

We just stuck a new ZDZ50NG in a BLING and in the air you simply can't do anything which makes the engine kill -rapid flat spins ,knife edge, end over end - you name it
I love this shot----------Dave was flying and I was shooting non telephoto snaps against the impending grey storm cloud cover.

A buddy of mine has one that pulls the same trick. It deadsticked on me during an inverted elevator. Luckily I was able to roll it over and land. Did the same thing on the next flight with another guy flying it. Runs perfect besides that.
Any ideas? My suggestion was to do what you did!

I had the EXACT same issue and fought with it for several months before I finally sold the engine. There are 2 other people at my field that have the same problem as well. I could replicate it like clockwork, even on the ground. My first DA50 was a screamer but low throttle and inverted = deadstick every time. All of the engines affected by this are the ‘newest’ version with the carb diaphragm facing up. I recently bought an EF 87” Yak equipped with a DA50. I was prepared to swap it out with the ZDZ50 I have on the bench, but to my surprise, it runs very well at all attitudes and throttle settings. It’s an older DA with carb diaphragm facing down. Nothing against DA, but that’s my personal experience with the 50 – hit or miss.. The ZDZ50 runs much more consistently, has a better midrange and throttle response and is almost identical in weight and power. If I had to pick one, it would be the ZDZ.
