Yip, this thread may be very old but guess what? I just started to put a new NIB ARF together.
Please, if there are anybody out there that has build one and know of any pitfalls or mods that needs doing, PM me or just write something here. It will be appreciated. Very naughty of me, I forgot to mention there is a GP 61 going in here... |

The mods I have completed so far is I moved the rudder servo into the fuse and set it up to be pull-pull. And yes, the pull-pull cables cross. To prevent the rubbing and wear on the pull pull cables, I cut two 6-inch long pieces of blue push-road tubing and rubber banded them together. I then slipped the cables into this and fed the cable through the fuse. Where the cables cross the push rod tubes form an "X" inside the fuse. NICE! Also, I used pushrod exit guides mounted to the side of the fuse to prevent cable fraying from rubbing on the balsa/ply fuse formers.
I have used all heavy duty Dubro hardware and carbon fiber pushrods on the elevator halves. Also, so far I have replaced the CA hinges with heavy duty Robart hinges set in 30 minute epoxy. The DlE 55RA is mounted and I am considering locating the throttle servo in the front portion of the cockpit. I will make the canopy removable and plan on tinting the canopy anyway since it has yellowed slightly due to its age. I really need to post some pictures. I plan on using matchbox's to set the left and right, upper and lower ailerons into a neutral position, then setting up my Spektrum Dx8 as a two aileron configured wing. This saves me a couple of channels (for smoke) and some extra fooling around. Will I need aileron differential with this plane? Hmmm? Not sure? |

Check your wing incidences also. I put one together a couple years back and it was 1/8" too negative on the bottom wing.

Yeah, I have read that this plane had issues with incidence right out of the box. Were you able to correct the problem easily or was it a major hassle? The next plane I build whenever that is, I am not going to buy one that needs all sorts of mods! PITA!!!

I was able to shim down the trailing edge of the bottom wing at the bolt holes. Almost unoticeable. It flew well on a DA50.

Here is how I "beefed" up the "N" braces which on this kit have a tendency to snap!

Who much difference is there between the CE and the Pitts, or is it the same plane with different color scheme?
I have just about finished my CE. Need to decide which batteries and switches must go in. I used everything included in the kit but managed to break 4 clevises! on the flying wires. I decided to do those to assist in holding the top wing in place as I don't trust just a couple of self tappers to do the job. It was quite a mission to get the engine fitted, especially with the shallow engine box. Fitting the fuel tank was also a bit of a challenge as I am using a pitts style muffler. On the matter of the bottom wing, well, it just did not fit in the wing saddle! Once the locating pins were engaged the wing would not drop into position! I cut away the wing saddle until I got a fit and then checked the incidence on the low wing and it seemed fine. Fitting the top wing again wasn't straight forward. I fitted the center brackets to the cabane just to find the struts out by about 1/2". It almost looked like a 6 blade prop including the fuzz. Well, I detached the cabane and fitted the struts in place and then refitted the center brackets to the wing and cabane and all seems well. I did not know how to attach the landing gear fairings to the fuzz, so I cut some thin fuel tubing, glued it to the fairing and glued the fairing to the landing ear with silicon. This way, if I need to remove it later on, I just have to cut it lose with a blade. The next challenge will be the wiring from the top wing to the Rx. I will be running separate channels for each aileron, top and bottom. This means 2 wires from the top. I am looking for a way to disguise the wiring down the cabane but am out of ideas. Please chime in. So far excluding the Rx and batteries the CG seems spot on with 3 x Savox MG servos in the tail and a throttle and choke servo on the servo tray. The plan is to add 2 LiFe 2100 Rx batteries and a 2200 LiPo ign bat . This way I can use ordinary switches. Power plant as mentioned before is a GP 61 with pitts muffler. Here are a couple of pics. |

i just picked up a Pitts 1/3 needs a bit of work from hangar rash and I was wondering what type of power to put in it. My friend had one and put in a bgx 3500 and said it flew well so he recommended a DLE 35cc. reading the thread I feel it needs at least a 50 or 55cc. I would welcome some feed back. Aslo what is an acceptable weight before it becomes unmanagable?

Grassie, those center cabanes were off a mile on mine too. I ended up cutting to fit! then I reinforced them with epoxy, ply and through bolts. Se my second picture above (inverted). I also custom made my upper aileron plug in sockets I will try and take a picture of those. Not too bad to make. I used the stock fuel tank but decided to move the rudder servo into the fuse and employ a pull-pull system in that. Turned out fairly good in my estimation.
P51, go with the 50-55cc engine. my $0.02 on the matter. |
