Better to be safe than sorry...If you get a leak, the fuel/oil mixture will soak into your airframe and ruin it. The covering will never stick again, and that would be the least of the problems. IMO

Re: Sick of fuel tanks---How to use a soda bottle?

I put some gas in a one gallon apple juice bottle a while ago. It ate the plastic cushion inside the cap (for lack of a better term) and then the stuff was dissolving and floating in my gas. This is not to mention that vibration on a cap might play if it is not set in the sealant, in my limited experience.

On a "Lighter" note...

I pulled a 64 ounce tank out of my Edge, the guys at the field said I needed a delivery system for air to air...... and will put in the 50 ounce soda bottle.

I got right at 9 ounces on the tank swap. 14 ounces of fuel weighs close to 11 ounces so that is a whopping 23 ounces or just shy of 1 3/4 pounds. I imagine I will put back up to two ounces for the light ply tank holder I will mount to carry the 50 ounce plus a 32 ounce for smoke. But if not flying the smoke 1 3/4 pounds is significant.

You are deffinetly on the right path...Now translate those thoughts into the airframe and other hardware to truly see the difference.

There are quite a few places to get CF tubes, Troy built is where I got them for my Yak.

Seal All is what alot of Jet guys use. If you are that worried about it, just use Hysol on the cap. Its fuel proof as well.

Re: Sick of fuel tanks---How to use a soda bottle?

i am also interested in using soda bottles for fuel and smoke tank. my question is does any body have any experience with the festo type connectors? i think you can get them from TBM and i also think i've seen jet guys using these for fuel and air lines. i ask as in my factory all my machinery use's festo type fitting and they never leak with 120 psi running through them, as well as just pushing on and clipping off. i think this type eliminates they rubber stopper to as the nipples screww though the alu cap and is locked on with nuts. can any one give me some input?

Remember that if you are doing a downline, the fuel is stuck to the back of the fuel tank. Unless you had a VPP system that would completely stop the airplane from diving in a nose-down position, the fuel is at the back..
Vic,

You are 100% correct. Common physics here guys, remember the bucket of water swinging around without spilling a drop? Same applies here.

Also I think the copper tube is so the clunk line won't come back on itself.

Do you think that putting a coca-cola bottle on a 30% plane would be a bad idea? I want to put a coke bottle on it but i am worried because it doesent hold as much as the 25 oz tank that came with the plane?

I agree with you except for one thing... take a sealed gas can and shake the crap out of it. The gas vaporizes and creates positive pressure in the tank.

Do what works for you.

This is a great weight saver and a very simple solution... great idea.

What bottle are you using for the 50 oz?

On a down line once the plane reaches constant speed anything not bolted down in the plane will accelerate at 9.8m/s due to gravity.

In both instances you need a force, Force=Mass x acceleration. The swinging bucket is constantly changing direction. While it may be at constant circular speed, it is accelerating in a new direction all the time. Hence the water stays in the swinging bucket.

Don't you run a vent line in your tank??

So the swinging bucket was a bad example...

When you accelerate in your car your gas goes to the back of the tank. When your plane is on a downline the plane accelerates to it's terminal velocity, thus providing the necessary force to move the gas to the back of the tank.
