Safely Store Your Giant-Scale Investment

If your giant scale airplane has a carbon or aluminum tube wing-spar, then FlyingGiants member Terryscustom might just have the coolest plane stand you can buy! Yep, that's a hefty statement, but we just love the look of these functional works of art. They're available for $130 and includes the main stand, removable tool holders, and an adjustable-height tail stand with nylon bolts. For mobility in your workshop, you can easily add casters to the bottom of the stand and wheel your bird around. You can contact Terryscustom through his FlyingGiants blog page to order one.

Check out this video by Terryscustom showing the assembly of the plane stand:

Wow, thanks guy's! Just noticed this thread this morning. Glad everyone is liking the stand, I've sent out about 60 of them and it's cool to see how people are adapting them to their own use.

They are meant as a "kit" so they can be put together and torn down quickly. Or, if you are like me and am always working on something, you can assemble it permanently.

For permanent assembly I recommend 2" casters, I use four swivel casters so I can roll it easily all over my shop.

I also recommend some cheap metal shelf brackets to strengthen the uprights and they only cost about $1 each at home depot, etc.: http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Hardware...iglink20264-20

We will be cutting them continually as we have machine time open so if you want one PM me and I can get you on the list for the next run. Price is $130 shipped in the USA.

The video was of the prototype. Since then we determined that the gussets did little and any added bracing did very little. The best bet is to add the casters and the shelf brackets from your local box store as listed above.

If they keep selling I'll have to make time to re-do the video but you get the idea.

Thanks, T.

Loving mine! You can also use dowel rods, thick PVC or spare spars to support to avoid using your "flying" spars if desired. Can be used for biplanes, turbines, whatever.

VERY COOL

I have gone to using a wood dowel mostly instead of the wing tubes. It is cut for a 1.5" wing tube but I use a 1 1/8" wood dowel. Another safety feature you can add to a wood dowel is to cross drill it and install a couple of small dowels in it to ensure nobody bumps it and knocks the tube off the stand. Some 20-30cc planes have really short wing tubes so the wood dowel set up like this works perfectly.

?? Put a couple of over-lapping wheels on each side, like the prop balancers, so the wing tube does not rub and squeal?? Although, will be more free to rotate. Maybe you would not want it to rotate freely. Just a suggestion.

Oh, and any thoughts on using that to balance your giant scale airplane? Say a padded, pinned bracket of some configuration to set on the over-lapping wheels that would be free to rotate, yet not damage a wing?

Easy for you to do if you want, that's the beauty of it being a kit Anything I do adds cost to everyone, so I'm keeping it simple and letting people adapt it to their needs.

Been pondering this, however exact balance on any plane 50cc and over is not critical and needs to be refined in the air anyway so I'm thinking this addition would not be too popular. HOWEVER, it would be super handy for a warbird or something like that that is critical so I have kept the though of that open for the future.
