ah the spades, this has been talked about ealrier inthe thread, but to refresh and im sure RJ or Seth will comment. not only do they help th elaoding onthe ailiorn, the angle aids in lift so the plane flys level and not tail down like most flat foamys. have fun!

-Aileron Counterbalance
-Side Area, stabilizes KE
-Stabilizes KE pitch coupling, the airplane has very little pitch coupling over a wide CG range
-Pre-loads the aileron down, helps the MX2 cruise at a more "level" angle-of-attack

Plus they look cool!

Servo-wise... I definitely recommend going with something a little better, at least for the ailerons. Most people don't think much of aileron blowback on foamies, but they're much more fun without it! An S3114 or S3154 will not allow any blowback.

3114s are hard to beat, but i got mine to the point of jittering last season so need new ones,. agreed the spades look cool

I recently read the following information about the aileron balance spades: The aileron balance spades enhanced the turning ability. Most flat foam planes require some rudder input to turn. With the aileron balance spades, turns are easily accomplished with just aileron and elevator.

can the spades be cut back to allow more aileron throw? I feel like the mx2 should have a better roll rate

You could delete the spades if you wish, but more aileron throw isn't necessarily a good thing (more drag goes along with it).

It's possible your aileron hinges are too stiff, or the servo isn't up to the task. Many people like the Futaba S3114/S3154. Gernot Bruckmann was reportedly using a Graupner C131 at the recent German indoor competition:

I haven't had a good foamie in quite a while. Just found out that there is a lhs that has an indoor flying area. I had to have something for those cold, rainy days. I just ended up ordering one of these in the combo package. RJ/Seth, is the FF combo a solid set up or would you recommend upgrading anything? Also thinking of adding vpp eventually and I haven't done any homework on that. Is it a no-brainer set up?

i actually just cut back the spades a little and got about another 15% throw and it flew much better
