Centering servos before installation

Well, I was trying to figure out how to center the servos for my A-10 project using a Powerbox royal system. I really did not want to have to keep plugging and unplugging servos in and out of it and going through the setup multiple times just to get the servo horns in an approximate place.

Then it hit me.....

I have a lemon receiver just sitting doing nothing!!! I can at least plug the servo in, get the general center position easily on each servo I work with. Install it, run the wires, and then finally do the setup once everything is completely set up!!! Brilliant if I must say so myself...

Now tell me if this is a dumb idea or a stroke of sheer less than stupid on my part...

I think I would call a stroke of "almost everyone does something like this"

Personally I use a Hitec HFP 25 servo tester, set to 1500us which matches my system instead of a spare receiver and transmitter but pretty much the same thing. It's simple and it works..

I have been using this cheap servo tester for years. It has 3 modes, manual, auto center, automatic end to end operation. This thing is GREAT! I even use it to bench run motors with small throttle servo

Glad I am able to meddle in mediocrity...

Those servo testers look interesting! Maybe on my next order!!

I use the Servo Exciter EF http://www.vexacontrol.com/xciter_details_1.html The receiver input allows you to match the TX signal so you can even setup max endpoints without needing the TX. One of the best RC hobby things I have ever purchased.

for a new install, I just use a spare Futaba receiver to do a quick test and then center the servo with the arm installed. After its mounted I then trim to eyeball center and go from there.

If its a hitec servo, I use a hitec programmer to set center.
